Senate Resolution 119 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 119 BY COMMITTEE ON RULES AND ADMINISTRATION A Resolution honoring Senator Zach Wahls for his 1 service in the Iowa Senate. 2 WHEREAS, Senator Zach Wahls was first elected in 3 November 2018, and has proudly served in the Senate 4 ever since; and 5 WHEREAS, Senator Wahls learned at a young age about 6 hard work and public service by earning the rank of 7 Eagle Scout; and 8 WHEREAS, Senator Wahls received his bachelor’s 9 degree from the University of Iowa and his master’s 10 degree in public affairs from Princeton University’s 11 School of Public and International Affairs; and 12 WHEREAS, following his 2011 testimony before the 13 Iowa House of Representatives Judiciary Committee 14 about growing up with lesbian parents in the midwest, 15 Senator Wahls worked primarily as an advocate in 16 the LGBTQ rights movement; wrote extensively about 17 his family’s experience, including a best-selling 18 book; participated in numerous speaking engagements, 19 including a prime-time speech at the 2012 Democratic 20 Convention; and co-founded and led Scouts for Equality, 21 which successfully organized the national campaign 22 to end discrimination against LGBT people in the Boy 23 Scouts of America; and 24 WHEREAS, Senator Wahls served as Senate Democratic 25 Leader, and has served on multiple legislative 26 committees during his time in the Senate, including 27 the Agriculture, Appropriations, Commerce, Education, 28 -1- LSB 6939SV (5) 91 jda/jm 1/ 2
S.R. 119 Government Oversight, Health and Human Services, 1 Local Government, Rules and Administration (ranking 2 member), Technology, Veterans Affairs, Ways and 3 Means, and Workforce committees; the Administration 4 and Regulation Appropriations Subcommittee and the 5 Education Appropriations Subcommittee (ranking member); 6 the Regents Universities Study Committee; and the 7 Legislative Council; and 8 WHEREAS, Senator Wahls has further demonstrated his 9 commitment to civic engagement by serving on several 10 other boards and commissions, including the Advisory 11 Council for Agricultural Education, the Human Rights 12 Board, and the Iowa Finance Authority; and 13 WHEREAS, Senator Wahls decided to run for office 14 because he never forgot what it felt like to be left 15 out and how hard families like his had to fight simply 16 to get a seat at the table, and during his time in the 17 Senate he has been a tireless champion for the rights 18 of not only the LGBTQ community but for all Iowans; and 19 WHEREAS, Senator Wahls is grateful to the citizens 20 of his district for placing their trust in him, and 21 looks forward to his next endeavors and to spending 22 more time with his wife, Dr. Chloe Angyal, and their 23 son, Elijah; NOW THEREFORE, 24 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate honors 25 Senator Zach Wahls for his years of service in the 26 Iowa Senate and wishes him all the best in the years 27 to come. 28 -2- LSB 6939SV (5) 91 jda/jm 2/ 2
