Senate Resolution 114 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 114 BY COMMITTEE ON RULES AND ADMINISTRATION A Resolution honoring Senator Julian Garrett for his 1 service in the Iowa Senate. 2 WHEREAS, Senator Julian Garrett was first elected 3 to the House of Representatives in November 2011 where 4 he served until winning a special election in November 5 2013 for the Senate where he has served ever since; and 6 WHEREAS, Senator Garrett earned a bachelor of arts 7 degree from Central College in Pella, Iowa, and a Juris 8 Doctor from the University of Iowa College of Law; and 9 WHEREAS, Senator Garrett is a retired attorney and 10 farmer living in Warren County with his wife, Nancy, 11 and has three children; and 12 WHEREAS, Senator Garrett thoroughly enjoyed his 13 time as a volunteer coach for Little League and 14 soccer, serving on the Indianola Little League Board of 15 Directors, and coaching middle school mock trial teams, 16 taking two of those teams to the state tournament; and 17 WHEREAS, Senator Garrett takes great pride in being 18 a long-time Farm Bureau member and raising his purebred 19 Charolais cattle on the farm; and 20 WHEREAS, Senator Garrett has been an active member 21 of the Warren County Republican Central Committee for 22 over 40 years, and twice served as Ronald Reagan’s 23 campaign chairman in Iowa’s former fifth congressional 24 district; and 25 WHEREAS, Senator Garrett previously served for 12 26 years as Iowa’s assistant attorney general in charge 27 of consumer protection; and 28 -1- LSB 6938SV (4) 91 as/jm 1/ 2
S.R. 114 WHEREAS, during his time in the Senate, Senator 1 Garrett served on the Justice Systems Appropriations 2 Subcommittee (chair and ranking member); the 3 Appropriations, Education, Local Government (chair), 4 Government Oversight (ranking member), International 5 Relations, Judiciary (vice chair), Transportation, 6 and Health and Human Services committees; the Elder 7 Abuse Prevention and Intervention Study Committee, the 8 Civil and Criminal Forfeiture Study Committee, the 9 Prescription Pain Medications Study Committee, and the 10 Violence in Iowa Study Committee; and the Investment 11 Board of the Iowa Public Employee’s Retirement System, 12 the Iowa Commission on Interstate Cooperation, and the 13 Commission on Tobacco Use Prevention and Control; and 14 WHEREAS, during his tenure, Senator Garrett has 15 championed efforts to overhaul the nomination process 16 for judges and supported historic tax cuts for Iowans, 17 welfare reform, and the protection of fetal life; and 18 WHEREAS, Senator Garrett is grateful to his 19 constituents for their faith in him over the last 20 several years and allowing him to be their voice in the 21 Iowa Senate since 2013; NOW THEREFORE, 22 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate honors 23 Senator Julian Garrett for his 15 years of service in 24 the Iowa General Assembly and wishes him all the best 25 in the years to come. 26 -2- LSB 6938SV (4) 91 as/jm 2/ 2
