Senate Resolution 102 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 102 BY McCLINTOCK and ZUMBACH A Resolution honoring and congratulating barbecue chef 1 and pitmaster Thyron Mathews for his appearance 2 as a competitor on the reality television cooking 3 competition BBQ Brawl. 4 WHEREAS, the members of the 91st General Assembly 5 take great pride in recognizing individuals whose 6 exemplary achievements bring national acclaim to 7 themselves, their communities, and the state of 8 Iowa; and 9 WHEREAS, one such exceptional individual is Thyron 10 Mathews of Oelwein, Iowa, who recently was a competitor 11 on the reality television cooking competition BBQ 12 Brawl, hosted by celebrity chefs Bobby Flay, Antonia 13 Lofaso, and Maneet Chauhan; and 14 WHEREAS, Thyron Mathews’ love for cooking can be 15 seen from his early childhood days, when he grew up 16 cooking with his granddad and his mom and dad, sitting 17 out back in the brick pit, barbecuing up tasty meats, 18 and is especially known for his mop sauce and mopping 19 technique; and 20 WHEREAS, once Thyron Mathews graduated from high 21 school he went on to play college football at Upper 22 Iowa University and began cooking barbecue for his 23 teammates, gaining him rave reviews; and 24 WHEREAS, Thyron Mathews earned a degree in criminal 25 justice and worked for the Fayette County Sheriff’s 26 Office, working his way up to jail administrator; and 27 WHEREAS, what started out as a small catering 28 -1- LSB 5190XS (3) 91 nls/jm 1/ 2

S.R. 102 business with his wife, Terrishane Mathews, has since 1 evolved into a full-scale barbecue operation, earning 2 16 Grand Championships and “Best in Show” at the Iowa 3 State Fair two years in row, as well as national fame 4 for winning Netflix’s hit competition show Barbecue 5 Showdown; and 6 WHEREAS, the Senate celebrates and applauds 7 barbecue chef and pitmaster Thyron Mathews for his many 8 achievements in the culinary arts; NOW THEREFORE, 9 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 10 recognizes and congratulates Thyron Mathews on his 11 accomplished culinary career and his recent appearance 12 as a competitor on the reality television cooking 13 competition BBQ Brawl, extending to him our best wishes 14 for continued success and happiness in all his future 15 endeavors. 16 -2- LSB 5190XS (3) 91 nls/jm 2/ 2
