For purposes of this section, “unattached competitor” 3 means a student who does not represent a school and does not 4 wear a school uniform or other apparel identifying the student 5 with a school. 6 2. A student in grades nine through twelve enrolled in a 7 school district or accredited nonpublic school may participate 8 in an athletic contest or competition that is not sponsored by 9 the student’s school, including a contest or competition in 10 which collegiate students participate, so long as the student 11 participates only as an unattached competitor. 12 3. A school shall not provide coaching, transportation, 13 or financial support to a student related to the student’s 14 participation in an athletic contest or competition as an 15 unattached competitor. 16 EXPLANATION 17 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 18 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 19 This bill establishes requirements for student participation 20 in athletic contests or competitions that are not sponsored 21 by the student’s school. The bill provides that a student in 22 grades 9 through 12 who participates in a non-school-sponsored 23 athletic contest or competition, including contests or 24 competitions in which collegiate students participate, must do 25 so as an unattached competitor. 26 The bill defines “unattached competitor” as a student who 27 does not represent a school and does not wear a school uniform 28 or other apparel identifying the student with a school.
