Concurrent
Resolution
designating
the
American
cream

draft
horse
as
the
official
state
horse
of
the
State

of
Iowa.

WHEREAS,
the
American
cream
draft
horse
is
the
only
4
draft
horse
breed
native
to
the
United
States;
and
5
WHEREAS,
the
American
cream
draft
horse
is
a
breed
6
that
traces
its
bloodline
back
to
a
mare
named
“Old
7
Granny”,
which
is
believed
to
have
been
foaled
in
Iowa
8
around
the
turn
of
the
last
century,
first
appearing
9
in
records
from
a
farm
sale
in
the
city
of
Jewell,
in
10
Story
county,
Iowa,
in
1911;
and
11
WHEREAS,
the
breed
was
recognized
by
the
Iowa
12
department
of
agriculture
in
1950,
based
on
a
1948
13
recommendation
by
the
national
stallion
enrollment
14
board;
and
15
WHEREAS,
in
1944,
the
American
cream
horse
16
association
of
America
was
chartered
by
Mr.
C.T.
17
Rierson,
and
his
assistant
Mrs.
Karene
(Bunker)
Topp,
18
of
Radcliffe,
Iowa,
the
culmination
of
almost
40
years
19
of
interest
in
creating
a
new
breed
of
American
draft
20
horse;
and
21
WHEREAS,
in
1993,
members
of
the
organization
voted
22
to
amend
the
organization’s
articles
of
incorporation
23
to
change
its
name
to
the
American
cream
draft
horse
24
association;
and
25
WHEREAS,
the
American
cream
draft
horse
is
26
immediately
identifiable
by
its
cream
coat,
pink
skin,

amber-colored
eyes,
specific
traits
of
the
famous
1
champagne
dilution
gene;
and
2
WHEREAS,
in
1990,
genetic
testing
found
that,

compared
with
other
draft
breeds
and
based
upon
gene
4
marker
data,
the
American
cream
draft
horse
formed
a
5
distinct
group
within
the
draft
horses;
and
6
WHEREAS,
the
breed
is
closely
associated
with
7
Iowa’s
farming
heritage
——
having
a
wide
chest;
8
sloping
shoulders;
a
short,
strong
back;
well-muscled
9
hindquarters
with
strong,
well-proportioned
10
legs
set
well
apart;
strong
hooves;
and
a
gentle
11
disposition;
NOW
THEREFORE,
12
BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
SENATE,
THE
HOUSE
OF
13
REPRESENTATIVES
CONCURRING,
That
the
American
cream
14
draft
horse
is
designated
and
shall
be
officially
known
15
as
the
state
horse
of
Iowa;
and
16
BE
IT
FURTHER
RESOLVED,
That
the
director
of
the
17
department
of
cultural
affairs
is
directed
to
cooperate
18
with
the
American
cream
draft
horse
association
to
19
obtain
appropriate
pictures
and
other
representations
20
of
the
American
cream
draft
horse
and
shall
display
the
21
pictures
and
representations
in
an
appropriate
place
in
22
the
state
historical
museum;
and
23
BE
IT
FURTHER
RESOLVED,
That
the
editor
of
the
Iowa
24
official
register
is
directed
to
cooperate
with
the
25
American
cream
draft
horse
association
to
include
an
26
appropriate
picture
and
commentary
of
the
American
27
cream
draft
horse
in
the
Iowa
official
register
along
28
with
the
pictures
of
the
state
rock,
state
flower,
29
state
bird,
and
state
tree.
