S.F. _____ Section 1. Section 542B.14, subsection 1, paragraph b, Code 1 2023, is amended to read as follows: 2 b. As a professional land surveyor: 3 (1) (a) Graduation from a college course of two years or 4 more in , which shall include mathematics, physical sciences, 5 mapping and surveying, or engineering in a school or college 6 basic science courses, and six years of practical experience, 7 all of which, in the opinion of the board, will properly 8 prepare the applicant for the examination in fundamental land 9 surveying subjects. 10 (b) However, prior to July 1, 1988, in lieu of compliance 11 with subparagraph division (a), the board may accept eight 12 years’ practical experience which, in the opinion of the board, 13 is of satisfactory character to properly prepare the applicant 14 for the examination in fundamental land surveying subjects. 15 (2) Successfully passing an examination in fundamental land 16 surveying subjects which is designed to show the knowledge of 17 general land surveying principles. 18 (3) In addition to any other requirement, a specific record 19 of four years or more of practical experience in land surveying 20 work which is of a character satisfactory to the board. 21 (4) Successfully passing an examination examinations 22 designed to determine the proficiency and qualifications to 23 engage in the practice of land surveying. No applicant shall 24 be entitled to take this examination until the applicant shows 25 the necessary practical experience in land surveying work. 26 Sec. 2. EFFECTIVE DATE. This Act takes effect on July 1, 27 2023. 28 Sec. 3. APPLICABILITY. This Act applies to applications for 29 a license as a professional land surveyor submitted on or after 30 the effective date of this Act. 31 EXPLANATION 32 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 33 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 34 This bill relates to licensure requirements for professional 35 -1- LSB 1775XC (6) 90 es/rn 1/ 2
S.F. _____ land surveyors. 1 The bill provides that a professional land surveyor shall 2 have graduated from a college program of two years or more, 3 consisting of mathematics and science courses, as well as 4 practical experience. Current law provides that a professional 5 land surveyor shall have graduated from a two-year program 6 from a school or college with classes in mathematics, physical 7 sciences, mapping and surveying, or engineering, plus six years 8 of practical experience. 9 The bill strikes a provision in Code section 542B.14, 10 for a land surveyor seeking licensure prior to July 1, 1988, 11 to substitute eight years of practical experience in lieu 12 of graduation from the required program. The bill provides 13 that one of the licensure requirements relating to successful 14 passage of an examination designed to determine proficiency 15 and qualifications for licensure is expanded to refer to 16 examinations. The bill strikes language requiring an applicant 17 to demonstrate necessary practical experience in land surveying 18 work prior to taking a land surveying examination. 19 The bill takes effect on July 1, 2023.
