Senate Resolution 6 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 6 BY SHIPLEY A Resolution honoring and congratulating John D. 1 Lawrence for his dedicated service to Iowa State 2 University of Science and Technology, the State of 3 Iowa, and all Iowans. 4 WHEREAS, John D. Lawrence was raised on a crop and 5 livestock farm in southwest Iowa; and 6 WHEREAS, John graduated from Iowa State University 7 of Science and Technology (Iowa State University), 8 earning his bachelor’s degree in animal science and his 9 master’s degree in economics; and 10 WHEREAS, John served as a professor of economics and 11 has served Iowa State University and the people of Iowa 12 in leading roles since 1991, including Interim Chair 13 of the Department of Animal Science, Associate Dean of 14 Extension and Outreach in the College of Agriculture 15 and Life Sciences, Director of Agriculture and Natural 16 Resources Extension, Assistant Director of the Iowa 17 Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station, 18 Director of the Iowa Beef Center, Interim Director of 19 the Center for Agricultural Law and Taxation, Interim 20 Director of the Beginning Farmer Center, and Interim 21 Director of the Iowa Nutrient Research Center; and 22 WHEREAS, John, as Iowa State University’s Vice 23 President for Extension and Outreach, has led 24 approximately 900 extension faculty and staff in 25 engaging all Iowans in research, education, and 26 extension experiences to address real-life challenges 27 and prepare for a thriving future; and 28 -1- LSB 2276XS (3) 90 da/rn 1/ 3
S.R. 6 WHEREAS, John has ensured that extension educational 1 programs in agriculture and natural resources grow the 2 economic base of Iowa agriculture, that community and 3 economic development programs empower communities to 4 shape their own futures, that 4-H youth development 5 programs empower Iowa youth to reach their full 6 potential, and that human sciences programs empower 7 Iowans to live their best lives every day; and 8 WHEREAS, John has developed relationships with 9 partnering organizations throughout the state and 10 extension councils in every county who support what 11 Iowans value a strong Iowa; and 12 WHEREAS, John has served as an example to, and 13 guided the development of, the next generation of 14 extension professionals ensuring that extension and 15 outreach programs will continue to deliver on Iowa 16 State University’s land-grant mission and engage Iowans 17 with the research, educational, and technological 18 resources of the university in partnership with 19 federal, state, and county governments; and 20 WHEREAS, John represented the College of Agriculture 21 and Life Sciences as a co-leader with Iowa Department 22 of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and Iowa Department 23 of Natural Resources in developing and implementing 24 Iowa’s Nutrient Reduction Strategy, a science and 25 technology-based approach to assess and reduce 26 nutrients delivered to Iowa waterways and the Gulf of 27 Mexico; and 28 WHEREAS, John has received many awards throughout 29 his career, including the Iowa Secretary of Agriculture 30 -2- LSB 2276XS (3) 90 da/rn 2/ 3
S.R. 6 Leader Award in 2017 for his work as part of the Iowa 1 Nutrient Reduction Strategy Science Team, the 2009 2 Iowa State University Extension Meritorious Service 3 Award, and the 2004 Dean’s Citation for Extraordinary 4 Contributions to the College of Agriculture and Life 5 Sciences, as well as being named by Iowa Farmer Today 6 as one of the 25 most influential people in Iowa 7 agriculture from 1984-2009, and receiving the 2022 8 Iowa Cattlemen’s Association Hall of Fame award; NOW 9 THEREFORE, 10 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That John D. Lawrence 11 be publicly recognized for his years of dedicated 12 service to Iowa State University, the state of Iowa, 13 and all Iowans; and 14 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a formal copy of this 15 resolution be presented to John D.
