Senate Resolution 110 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 110 BY KRAAYENBRINK A Resolution recognizing and congratulating Iowa State 1 University (ISU) wrestler David Carr for his storied 2 collegiate wrestling career. 3 WHEREAS, David Carr entered the 2024 National 4 Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I 5 wrestling championship tournament as the fourth seed 6 in the 165-pound weight class, and secured victories 7 against the fifth, second, and top seeded wrestlers 8 on his was to earning his second NCAA individual 9 title; and 10 WHEREAS, the championship match pitted him against 11 an opponent from the top team in the nation, Carr 12 relied on his experience, strength, and tactics to 13 strike early for key points in the first five seconds 14 of the match before making a third-period comeback and 15 securing the decisive point via riding time, becoming 16 the 17th Cyclone wrestler to win multiple national 17 championships; and 18 WHEREAS, having never finished lower than 19 third place (2022) on the final podium at the NCAA 20 championship, David bookended a runner-up finish (2023) 21 by skipping off the mat as a two-time national champion 22 (2021 at 157 pounds and 2024 at 165 pounds); and 23 WHEREAS, the Canton, Ohio, native ranked fourth in 24 Cyclone wrestling career winning percentage (.960), 25 posted a 120-5 record, became a five-time conference 26 finalist and four-time conference champion, is one of 27 only four Cyclones to win four individual conference 28 -1- LSB 6396XS (1) 90 th/jm 1/ 2
S.R. 110 titles, and became the first five-time All-American in 1 program history; and 2 WHEREAS, fulfilling a goal he had for the Cyclone 3 team, along with his head coach and Big 12 Coach of 4 the Year, Kevin Dresser, Carr lead the resurgence 5 of Cyclone wrestling, helping the Cyclones win a 6 Big 12 conference championship team title and earn a 7 fourth-place team finish at the NCAA championship; and 8 WHEREAS, Nate, Carr’s father and three-time national 9 champion at ISU from 1981 to 1983, and David are one 10 of only four father-son duos to each win multiple NCAA 11 Division I national titles, with David’s most recent 12 being the 71st in Cyclone history; and 13 WHEREAS, off the mat, David also excelled in the 14 classroom, ending his career as a four-time National 15 Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American, 16 a four-time Academic All-Big 12 team member, and a 17 College Sports Communicator Academic All-American 18 (2023); NOW THEREFORE, 19 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 20 congratulates and honors David Carr for his outstanding 21 wrestling accomplishments, culminating in the 2024 NCAA 22 wrestling championship title at 165 pounds; and 23 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That upon passage, the 24 Secretary of the Senate shall transmit a copy of 25 this resolution to David Carr; ISU wrestling head 26 coach, Kevin Dresser; ISU director of athletics, Jamie 27 Pollard; and ISU president, Wendy Wintersteen. 28 -2- LSB 6396XS (1) 90 th/jm 2/ 2
