TAYLOR , PETERSEN , and WEINER A Resolution recognizing and congratulating the 1 Iowa State University Cyclones (Cyclones) men’s 2 basketball team for a successful 2023-2024 season. 3 WHEREAS, the Cyclones men’s basketball team 4 finished second in the Big 12 conference regular-season 5 standings earning a double-bye in the first two rounds 6 of the conference tournament; and 7 WHEREAS, the Cyclones won the Big 12 Conference 8 Tournament championship for the sixth time in school 9 history, having now won every Conference championship 10 game in which the team has competed, by defeating the 11 Houston Cougars, 69-41; and 12 WHEREAS, the championship matchup featured a clash 13 between the conference’s best defensive teams, the 14 Cyclones reigned supreme and held the Associated Press 15 Top-25 (AP Poll) number-one team to just 26.8 percent 16 shooting, landing the Cyclones as the fourth-ranked 17 team in the AP Poll; and 18 WHEREAS, the victory marked the fourth time the 19 Cyclones have won against the top-ranked team with the 20 28-point margin of victory becoming the worst loss for 21 -1- LSB 6395XS (4) 90 th/jm 1/ 3
S.R. 109 a number-one ranked team since 1968; and 1 WHEREAS, the Cyclones used a second-half run 2 outscoring the Cougars 18-3, eventually building the 3 lead to 32 points in front of the “Hilton South” crowd 4 in Kansas City before the final whistle; and 5 WHEREAS, the Cyclones were led by freshman Milan 6 Momcilovic (18 points), Keshon Gilbert (16 points), 7 and Hason Ward (13 points off the bench) in the 8 championship game, with Milan Momcilovic, Keshon 9 Gilbert, and Tamin Lipsey earning spots on the Big 10 12 Championship All-Tournament team, and Keshon 11 Gilbert being named the tournament’s Most Outstanding 12 Player; and 13 WHEREAS, the Cyclones head coach T.J. Otzelberger, 14 became the program’s fourth coach to win a conference 15 championship tournament and won the second-most games 16 in a single season in school history (29) on his way to 17 being named a finalist for the Naismith Coach of the 18 Year honors; and 19 WHEREAS, following the conference-champion automatic 20 bid into the National Collegiate Athletic Association 21 (NCAA) men’s basketball tournament, the Cyclones earned 22 a No. 2 seed and claimed victories over South Dakota 23 State and Washington State to reach the “Sweet 16”, 24 eventually falling to Illinois; and 25 WHEREAS, sophomore point guard Tamin Lipsey was one 26 of four finalists for the Naismith Defensive Player 27 of the Year and received an AP All-American honorable 28 mention, in addition to earning National Association of 29 Basketball Coaches All-District 8 Honors and College 30 -2- LSB 6395XS (4) 90 th/jm 2/ 3
S.R. 109 Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors; and 1 WHEREAS, head coach T.J. Otzelberger became the 2 Cyclones’ first coach to lead two teams to the Sweet 3 16, and joined Tim Floyd as the only coaches in program 4 history to take a team to the NCAA tournament in each 5 of the coach’s respective first three seasons; NOW 6 THEREFORE, 7 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 8 congratulates head coach T.J.
