Senate Resolution 102 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 102 BY KOELKER , DAWSON , REICHMAN , SINCLAIR , GRUENHAGEN , SALMON , KLIMESH , KRAAYENBRINK , COURNOYER , BISIGNANO , EVANS , DOTZLER , TRONE GARRIOTT , SHIPLEY , GIDDENS , DRISCOLL , WEINER , CELSI , KNOX , BOUSSELOT , JOCHUM , DICKEY , WEBSTER , ROWLEY , GREEN , WHITVER , BOULTON , and ZAUN A Resolution to address the stigma around the term 1 mental health by recognizing the term brain health. 2 WHEREAS, the brain is an organ susceptible to 3 disease and disorder; and 4 WHEREAS, maintaining a healthy brain is critical to 5 the well-being of every Iowan; and 6 WHEREAS, with preventative measures and early 7 treatment, Iowans with brain health issues are better 8 able to mitigate the impact of brain disease and brain 9 illness; and 10 WHEREAS, awareness and education are necessary 11 to end the stigma surrounding mental illness and to 12 encourage Iowans to take more preventative measures and 13 to seek early treatment for brain health issues; NOW 14 THEREFORE, 15 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 16 finds that the term “brain health” means all aspects 17 of the brain impacted by biological and physical 18 characteristics of the brain which may impact mood and 19 behavior; and 20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Senate recognizes 21 the term brain health as a term mental health 22 providers, caretakers, and every Iowan may use 23 -1- LSB 5252XS (2) 90 dg/ko 1/ 2
S.R. 102 synonymously with the terms mental health, mental 1 illness, and behavioral health in order to encourage 2 Iowans to seek brain health services in an environment 3 free of stigma; and 4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Senate acknowledges 5 that its recognition of the term brain health does not 6 replace the terms mental health or mental illness. 7 -2- LSB 5252XS (2) 90 dg/ko 2/ 2
