S.F. 68 Section 1. Section 1.18, subsection 1, paragraph b, Code 1 2023, is amended to read as follows: 2 b. Throughout the history of Iowa and of the United States, 3 the common thread binding individuals of differing backgrounds 4 together has been the English language and any other language 5 deemed necessary to achieve the purposes of the state of Iowa 6 and the political subdivisions of the state . 7 EXPLANATION 8 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 9 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 10 This bill amends Code section 1.18, regarding Iowa English 11 language reaffirmation, to provide that the general assembly 12 declares that the common thread binding individuals in the 13 state includes, in addition to the English language, any other 14 language deemed necessary to achieve the purposes of the state. 15 -1- LSB 1467XS (2) 90 ec/rn 1/ 1
