S.F. 2346 Section 1. Section 607A.5, Code 2024, is amended to read as 1 follows: 2 607A.5 Automatic excuse from jury service. 3 1. A person shall be excused from jury service if the 4 person submits written documentation verifying, to the court’s 5 satisfaction, that the person is solely responsible for the 6 daily care of a person with a permanent disability living 7 in the person’s household and that the performance of juror 8 service would cause substantial risk of injury to the health of 9 the person with a disability, or that the person is the mother 10 of a breastfed child and is responsible for the daily care of 11 the child. However, if the person is regularly employed at a 12 location other than the person’s household, the person shall 13 not be excused under this section subsection . 14 2. A person shall be excused from jury service if the person 15 is between eighteen and twenty-one years of age and provides 16 the court with documentation that the person is enrolled 17 in high school classes, is a high school student attending 18 college-level classes at an institution as defined in section 19 261E.2, or is a high school student participating in career 20 and technical education programs or advanced college placement 21 courses provided by a school district or community college, and 22 wishes to be excused from jury service. 23 EXPLANATION 24 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 25 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 26 This bill creates an automatic excuse from jury service. The 27 bill requires a court to excuse a person who is between the 28 ages of 18 and 21 and who provides the court with documentation 29 that the person is enrolled in high school classes, is a high 30 school student attending college-level courses, or is a high 31 school student participating in career and technical education 32 programs or advance college placement courses provided by a 33 school district or community college, if the person wishes to 34 be excused from jury service. 35 -1- LSB 5670SV (2) 90 cm/ns 1/ 1
