S.F. 2141 Section 1. Section 155A.46, subsection 1, Code 2024, is 1 amended by adding the following new paragraph: 2 NEW PARAGRAPH . f. A pharmacist may, pursuant to statewide 3 protocols developed by the board in consultation with the 4 department of health and human services and consistent with 5 subsection 2, order and dispense self-administered hormonal 6 contraceptives to patients. For the purposes of this 7 paragraph, “self-administered hormonal contraceptive” means 8 a self-administered hormonal contraceptive that is approved 9 by the United States food and drug administration to prevent 10 pregnancy. 11 EXPLANATION 12 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 13 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 14 This bill relates to the authority of pharmacists to order 15 and dispense self-administered hormonal contraceptives. The 16 bill authorizes a pharmacist, pursuant to statewide protocols 17 developed by the board of pharmacy in consultation with the 18 department of health and human services and consistent with 19 requirements for maintenance of records, notification of 20 health care providers or provision of a written record to 21 the patient, and continuing education, order and dispense 22 self-administered hormonal contraceptives to patients.
