H.F. 2467 Section 1. Section 282.18, subsection 9, paragraph a, Code 1 2024, is amended by adding the following new subparagraph: 2 NEW SUBPARAGRAPH . (12) If the pupil participates in open 3 enrollment because the pupil is bereaved due to the death of 4 the pupil’s friend or relative. 5 EXPLANATION 6 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 7 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 8 This bill relates to the eligibility to participate in 9 varsity interscholastic athletic contests and athletic 10 competitions of pupils who participate in open enrollment due 11 to the death of the pupil’s friend or relative. 12 Current law prohibits a pupil who participates in open 13 enrollment for purposes of attending grades 9 through 12 in a 14 school district other than the pupil’s district of residence 15 from participating in varsity interscholastic athletic contests 16 and athletic competitions during the pupil’s first 90 school 17 days of enrollment in the receiving district. However, current 18 law establishes several exceptions to this general prohibition 19 that allow such a pupil to participate immediately. The bill 20 adds to that list of exceptions circumstances where the pupil 21 participates in open enrollment because the pupil is bereaved 22 due to the death of the pupil’s friend or relative. 23 -1- LSB 5044YH (3) 90 jda/jh 1/ 1
