H.F. 2224 Section 1. Section 153.20, Code 2024, is amended to read as 1 follows: 2 153.20 Drugs, medicine, and surgery. 3 1. A dentist shall have the right to prescribe and 4 administer drugs or medicine, perform such surgical operations, 5 administer general or local anesthetics and use such appliances 6 as may be necessary to the proper practice of dentistry. 7 2. The board shall not require additional anesthesia 8 training or permitting, or the presence of additional 9 personnel, as a condition of allowing a dentist to utilize 10 moderate sedation during a procedure if an anesthesiologist, 11 certified registered nurse anesthetist, or dentist with a 12 proper license and permit is engaged solely in administering 13 the moderate sedation. This subsection does not apply if a 14 dentist is also performing duties other than administering 15 moderate sedation during the procedure. 16 EXPLANATION 17 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 18 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 19 This bill relates to the administration of moderate 20 sedation by a dentist. The bill prohibits the board from 21 requiring additional anesthesia training or permitting, or the 22 presence of additional personnel, as a condition of allowing 23 a dentist to utilize moderate sedation during a procedure if 24 an anesthesiologist, certified registered nurse anesthetist, 25 or dentist with a proper license and permit is engaged solely 26 in administering the moderate sedation.
