148A.5A
Referral
for
diagnostic
1
imaging.
2
1.
Notwithstanding
any
provision
to
the
contrary,
a
3
physical
therapist,
as
part
of
the
physical
therapy
patient
4
evaluation
and
treatment
as
specified
under
section
148A.1,
may
5
order
diagnostic
imaging
to
be
performed
and
interpreted
by
6
other
appropriately
licensed
health
care
professionals.

2.
Unless
a
patient
does
not
have
a
primary
care
provider,
8
a
physical
therapist
who
orders
diagnostic
imaging
shall
9
report
the
results
of
the
diagnostic
imaging
to
the
patient’s
10
designated
primary
care
provider
within
seven
days
following
11
receipt
of
the
results
to
ensure
patient
coordination
of
care.
12
3.
The
board
of
physical
and
occupational
therapy
shall
13
adopt
rules
pursuant
to
chapter
17A
to
administer
this
section
14
and
to
ensure
patient
coordination
of
care.

4.
For
the
purposes
of
this
section,
“diagnostic
imaging”
16
means
medical
imaging
technologies
that
are
used
to
view
the
17
human
body
in
order
to
diagnose,
monitor,
or
treat
medical
18
conditions.
“Diagnostic
imaging”
includes
but
is
not
limited
to
19
ultrasound
imaging,
magnetic
resonance
imaging,
x-ray
imaging,
20
and
computed
tomography.

EXPLANATION

The
inclusion
of
this
explanation
does
not
constitute
agreement
with
23
the
explanation’s
substance
by
the
members
of
the
general
assembly.

This
bill
authorizes
a
physical
therapist,
as
part
of
the
25
physical
therapy
patient
evaluation
and
treatment
described
26
in
the
definition
of
and
authorization
for
physical
therapy,
27
to
order
diagnostic
imaging
to
be
performed
and
interpreted
28
by
other
appropriately
licensed
health
care
professionals.

Unless
a
patient
does
not
have
a
primary
care
provider,
a
30
physical
therapist
who
orders
diagnostic
imaging
shall
report
31
the
diagnostic
imaging
results
to
the
patient’s
designated
32
primary
care
provider
within
seven
days
following

of

results

The
bill

the
bill,
“diagnostic

means
medical
imaging
technologies
that
are
used
to

to
ultrasound
imaging,
