Senate Resolution 3 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 3 BY COURNOYER A Resolution urging the Iowa High School Girls Athletic 1 Union to sanction girls wrestling as a high school 2 sport. 3 WHEREAS, Iowa has a robust history and unrivaled 4 passion for wrestling as a high school sport; and 5 WHEREAS, the number of participants in high school 6 girls wrestling in this state has grown tenfold in the 7 last five years; and 8 WHEREAS, the third and fourth girls in Iowa history 9 qualified for the state wrestling tournament in 10 2021; and 11 WHEREAS, 457 girls from over 100 schools competed 12 in the third annual Iowa girls state wrestling 13 championships in 2021; and 14 WHEREAS, a majority of states in this country 15 sanction girls wrestling as a high school sport; and 16 WHEREAS, participation in sanctioned athletic 17 competition on the high school level can lead to 18 invaluable opportunities to compete and succeed at the 19 collegiate level; and 20 WHEREAS, girls wrestling remains unsanctioned by the 21 Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union as a high school 22 sport in this state; and 23 WHEREAS, girls in this state deserve and have earned 24 the same opportunity to demonstrate their skills on the 25 mat as boys; NOW THEREFORE, 26 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Iowa Senate 27 urges the Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union to 28 -1- LSB 2718XS (1) 89 je/jh 1/ 2
