Senate Resolution 118 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 118 BY COMMITTEE ON RULES AND ADMINISTRATION A Resolution honoring Senator Liz Mathis for her years 1 of service in the Iowa Senate. 2 WHEREAS, Senator Liz Mathis was born and raised in 3 DeWitt, and graduated from the University of Iowa in 4 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in communication, theater 5 arts, and journalism; and 6 WHEREAS, Senator Mathis was first elected to the 7 Iowa Senate in 2011 to represent District 18 and was 8 reelected in 2012 to represent District 34, both of 9 which include Marion, Hiawatha, Robins, and portions 10 of rural Linn County; and 11 WHEREAS, Senator Mathis’s professional 12 accomplishments include serving in multiple roles with 13 Four Oaks, a child welfare agency, and as a news anchor 14 telling the stories of Iowa residents; and 15 WHEREAS, Senator Mathis is active in the eastern 16 Iowa community, serving as a member of the Wartburg 17 College Board of Regents, the Marion Cares Advisory 18 Board, the Rotary Club of Cedar Rapids, and the 19 University of Iowa President’s Club, among other 20 groups; and 21 WHEREAS, Senator Mathis’s tenure in the Iowa Senate 22 included membership on the Agriculture, Appropriations, 23 Commerce, Human Resources (Chairperson), and Veterans 24 Affairs (Vice Chairperson) standing committees; the 25 Agriculture and Natural Resources Appropriations 26 (Ranking Member) and Administration and Regulation 27 Appropriations (Chairperson) subcommittees; the 28 -1- LSB 6261SV (8) 89 js/rn 1/ 2
S.R. 118 Health Policy Oversight Committee; and the Career and 1 Technical Education Implementation and Elder Abuse 2 Prevention and Intervention study committees; and 3 WHEREAS, Senator Mathis used her role on the 4 Committee on Agriculture to help Iowa family farmers 5 and farming communities; and 6 WHEREAS, Senator Mathis has worked to support Iowa 7 families while they have struggled with health care, 8 the COVID-19 pandemic, and natural disasters, and the 9 emotional and economic challenges that have come with 10 those obstacles; and 11 WHEREAS, Senator Mathis’s legislative career has 12 been exemplified by her support for efforts to promote 13 the health and safety of Iowans, particularly those in 14 vulnerable populations; NOW THEREFORE, 15 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Iowa Senate 16 honors and thanks Senator Liz Mathis for her years of 17 public service in the Iowa Senate and wishes her and 18 her family all the best in the years to come. 19 -2- LSB 6261SV (8) 89 js/rn 2/ 2
