amended
to
read
as

a

motor
vehicle,

the
transportation
of
persons
for

compensation,
or
hire

a

who
operates
a
truck

tractor,
road
tractor,
or
a
motor
truck
which
has
a
gross

vehicle
weight
rating
exceeding
sixteen
thousand
pounds
.

the
paragraph

The
inclusion
of
this
explanation
does
not
constitute
agreement
with

the
explanation’s
substance
by
the
members
of
the
general
assembly.

Under
current
law,
chauffeurs
are
subject
to
special
21
driver’s
licensing
requirements.
A
chauffeur
is
a
person
22
who
operates
a
motor
vehicle,
including
a
school
bus,
in
the
23
transportation
of
persons
for
wages,
compensation,
or
hire,
or
24
a
person
who
operates
a
truck
tractor,
road
tractor,
or
a
motor
25
truck
which
has
a
gross
vehicle
weight
rating
exceeding
16,000
26
pounds.
There
are
12
exceptions
that
specifically
exempt
27
certain
persons
from
being
considered
a
chauffeur.

This
bill
eliminates
from
the
definition
of
chauffeur
29
persons
who
operate
a
truck
tractor,
road
tractor,
or
motor
30
truck
which
has
a
gross
vehicle
weight
rating
exceeding
16,000
31
pounds.
The
bill
changes
the
existing
exception
relating
to
32
volunteer
fire
fighters
and
volunteer
ambulance
and
rescue
33
squad
attendants
by
eliminating
the
volunteer
requirement

and
by
eliminating
the
volunteer
classification
for
persons

receive
nominal
compensation
not
based
upon
the
value
of

the
service
performed.
The
bill
exempts
all
fire
fighters
2
when
operating
a
fire
apparatus
and
all
ambulance
and
rescue
3
squad
attendants
when
operating
an
ambulance
or
rescue
squad
4
apparatus
from
being
considered
a
chauffeur.

The
fee
for
a
chauffeur’s
instruction
permit
is
$12
compared
6
to
a
fee
of
$6
for
an
instruction
permit
other
than
a
special
7
instruction,
chauffeur’s
instruction,
or
commercial
learner’s
8
permit.
The
fee
for
a
noncommercial
chauffeur
driver’s
license
9
is
$8
per
year
of
validity
compared
to
a
fee
of
$4
per
year
of
10
validity
for
noncommercial
driver’s
licenses.
