Code
2022,
is
amended
by
adding

the
following
new
subsections:

NEW
SUBSECTION
.
2A.
“Cognitive
screening”
means
the

administration
of
a
formal,
evidence-based
assessment
to

identify
possible
cognitive
concerns.

NEW
SUBSECTION
.
2B.
“Cognitive
screening
instrument”

means
a
formal,
evidence-based
test,
protocol,
or
other
7
methodology
by
which
a
cognitive
screening
is
administered.

“Cognitive
screening
instrument”
includes
the
Montreal
cognitive
9
assessment,
mini-mental
state
examination,
general
practitioner
10
assessment
of
cognition,
six-item
cognitive
impairment
11
test,
abbreviated
mental
test
score,
Addenbrooke’s
cognitive
12
assessment-revised,
clock-drawing
test,
mini-cog
test,
and
13
three-word
recall
test.

Cognitive
screening.

1.
An
audiologist
or
speech
pathologist
may
provide
16
cognitive
screening
services
as
provided
in
this
section.

2.
a.
An
audiologist
or
speech
pathologist
shall
not
18
administer
a
cognitive
screening
instrument
unless
the
19
audiologist
or
speech
pathologist
has
completed
sufficient
20
training
in
administering
the
instrument
to
provide
a
21
sufficient
standard
of
care.

b.
An
audiologist
or
speech
pathologist
shall
not
administer
23
a
cognitive
screening
instrument
that
requires
certification
24
unless
the
audiologist
or
speech
pathologist
obtains
active
25
certification
prior
to
the
first
administration
of
the
26
instrument
and
maintains
an
active
certification
of
the
27
instrument
during
all
administrations.

3.
Following
the
completion
of
a
cognitive
screening,
an
29
audiologist
or
speech
pathologist
shall
refer
the
patient
to
a
30
health
care
provider
or
specialist
for
further
evaluation
in
31
accordance
with
the
scoring
protocol
reflected
on
the
cognitive
32
screening
instrument.

This
bill
relates
to
the
practice
of
audiologists
and
2
speech
pathologists.
The
bill
allows
audiologists
and
speech
3
pathologists
to
administer
specified
cognitive
screenings,
4
defined
in
the
bill,
if
the
audiologist
or
speech
pathologist
5
has
appropriate
training
and
certification
in
the
use
of
a
6
cognitive
screening
instrument,
defined
in
the
bill.
Following
7
the
completion
of
a
cognitive
screening,
the
bill
requires
an
8
audiologist
or
speech
pathologist
to
refer
the
patient
to
a
9
health
care
provider
or
specialist
for
further
evaluation
in
10
accordance
with
the
scoring
protocol
reflected
on
the
cognitive
11
screening
instrument.
