House Resolution 110 - Introduced HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 110 BY JENEARY A Resolution honoring the work of the Iowa SIDS 1 Foundation. 2 WHEREAS, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is 3 the unexplained death, usually during sleep, of a 4 seemingly healthy baby less than one year old and 5 sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) is the sudden 6 death of an otherwise healthy infant with a discernible 7 cause; and 8 WHEREAS, SIDS is the leading cause of death among 9 babies between the ages of one month and one year, 10 causing approximately 1,360 deaths in the United States 11 in 2017, the most recent year for which statistics 12 related to SIDS are available from the Centers for 13 Disease Control; and 14 WHEREAS, the Iowa SIDS Foundation is a statewide 15 voluntary organization founded by parents to provide 16 emotional support to families who have suffered a loss 17 due to SIDS or SUID and advance medical research into 18 unexpected sleep-related infant deaths; and 19 WHEREAS, the Iowa SIDS Foundation provides 20 invaluable educational resources to Iowa families, 21 health care professionals, and child care providers 22 about SIDS, safe sleep practices, and additional ways 23 to help reduce the chance of SIDS; and 24 WHEREAS, the Iowa SIDS Foundation facilitates 25 support groups and connections to resources for people 26 of all ages in a family grieving a child lost to 27 SIDS; and 28 -1- LSB 6243YH (2) 89 dg/rn 1/ 2

H.R. 110 WHEREAS, the Iowa SIDS Foundation works with health 1 care professionals, child care providers, emergency 2 medical service providers, funeral directors, and 3 community groups by giving presentations and offering 4 workshops on safe sleep training and safe sleep 5 practices; and 6 WHEREAS, the Iowa SIDS Foundation helps fund medical 7 research that seeks to discover the cause or causes of 8 SIDS and find ways to prevent SIDS from occurring; NOW 9 THEREFORE, 10 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 11 That the House of Representatives honors the Iowa 12 SIDS Foundation for its efforts in educating Iowans 13 regarding SIDS, assisting Iowans impacted by SIDS, 14 and furthering research regarding SIDS causes and 15 prevention; and 16 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this 17 resolution be transmitted to Mr. Anthony Lipski, 18 president of the Iowa SIDS Foundation. 19 -2- LSB 6243YH (2) 89 dg/rn 2/ 2
