Code

amended
to
read
as

follows:

State
medical
examiner
——
accreditation
.

1.
The
office
and
position
of
state
medical
examiner
4
is
established
for
administrative
purposes
within
the
Iowa
5
department
of
public
health.
Other
state
agencies
shall
6
cooperate
with
the
state
medical
examiner
in
the
use
of
7
state-owned
facilities
when
appropriate
for
the
performance
of
8
nonadministrative
duties
of
the
state
medical
examiner.
The
9
state
medical
examiner
shall
be
a
physician
and
surgeon
or
10
osteopathic
physician
and
surgeon,
be
licensed
to
practice
11
medicine
in
the
state
of
Iowa,
and
be
board
certified
or
12
eligible
to
be
board
certified
in
anatomic
and
forensic
13
pathology
by
the
American
board
of
pathology.
The
state
14
medical
examiner
shall
be
appointed
by
and
serve
at
the
15
pleasure
of
the
director
of
public
health
upon
the
advice
of
16
and
in
consultation
with
the
director
of
public
safety
and
17
the
governor.
The
state
medical
examiner,
in
consultation
18
with
the
director
of
public
health,
shall
be
responsible
for
19
developing
and
administering
the
medical
examiner’s
budget
20
and
for
employment
of
medical
examiner
staff
and
assistants.

The
state
medical
examiner
may
be
a
faculty
member
of
the
22
university
of
Iowa
college
of
medicine
or
the
college
of
law
at
23
the
university
of
Iowa,
and
any
of
the
examiner’s
assistants
or
24
staff
may
be
members
of
the
faculty
or
staff
of
the
university
25
of
Iowa
college
of
medicine
or
the
college
of
law
at
the
26
university
of
Iowa.

2.
The
office
of
the
state
medical
examiner
shall
be
deemed
28
to
be
an
accredited
state
medical
examiner
for
all
purposes
in
29
this
state.
No
other
entity
shall
provide
an
accreditation
for
30
the
office
of
the
state
medical
examiner.

EXPLANATION

The
inclusion
of
this
explanation
does
not
constitute
agreement
with

the
explanation’s
substance
by
the
members
of
the
general
assembly.

This
bill
relates
to
the
accreditation
of
the
state
medical

The
bill
requires
that
the
office
of
the
state

medical
examiner
shall
be
deemed
to
be
an
accredited
state
2
medical
examiner
for
all
purposes
in
this
state.
The
bill

prohibits
any
other
entity
from
offering
an
accreditation
for
4
the
office
of
the
state
medical
examiner.
