ELIGIBILITY
REQUIREMENTS
FOR
LAW
ENFORCEMENT
OFFICERS.
The
2
Iowa
law
enforcement
academy
shall
amend
its
administrative
3
rules
pursuant
to
chapter
17A
to
provide
that
a
law
enforcement
4
officer
must
either
be
a
citizen
of
the
United
States
or
a
5
lawful
resident
of
the
United
States
who
has
been
in
the
6
United
States
legally
for
at
least
five
years
and
has
legal
7
authorization
to
work
in
the
United
States.

The
inclusion
of
this
explanation
does
not
constitute
agreement
with
10
the
explanation’s
substance
by
the
members
of
the
general
assembly.

This
bill
relates
to
minimum
eligibility
requirements
for
12
Iowa
law
enforcement
officers.

Under
current
law,
no
person
may
be
selected
or
appointed
as
14
a
law
enforcement
officer
unless
the
person
is
a
citizen
of
the
15
United
States.
16
The
bill
directs
the
Iowa
law
enforcement
academy
to
amend
17
its
administrative
rules
concerning
general
eligibility
18
requirements
for
law
enforcement
officers
to
also
allow
a
19
person
who
is
a
lawful
resident
of
the
United
States
who
has
20
been
in
the
United
States
legally
for
at
least
five
years
and
21
has
legal
authorization
to
work
in
the
United
States
to
be
22
selected
or
appointed
as
a
law
enforcement
officer.
