Senate Resolution 11 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 11 BY DAWSON A Resolution recognizing the centennial of the 1 six-month formation period of the American Legion in 2 Iowa. 3 WHEREAS, the formation of the American Legion is 4 traditionally regarded as beginning with the Paris 5 caucus held in Paris, France, on March 15-17, 1919, 6 where Iowa was represented by two individuals, Sergeant 7 Thomas Rowe of the 42nd Infantry Division and Wagoner 8 Dale Shaw of the 88th Infantry Division; and 9 WHEREAS, in May 1919, two Iowans, Sergeant Charles 10 A. Doxsee of Monticello and Major H. H. Polk of Des 11 Moines represented Iowa on the planning committee for 12 the St. Louis caucus held in St. Louis, Missouri, on 13 May 8-10, 1919, where a delegation of 38 Iowans were 14 present; and 15 WHEREAS, the creation of the American Legion in 16 Iowa began with the appointment of John MacVicar as 17 temporary adjutant and the chartering of local posts 18 beginning on May 28, 1919; and 19 WHEREAS, the first Department Convention of the 20 American Legion in Iowa was held at the Hotel Fort 21 Des Moines, in Des Moines, Iowa, on September 4-5, 22 1919; and 23 WHEREAS, the United States Congress authorized the 24 issuance of a federal charter to the American Legion 25 on September 16, 1919; and 26 WHEREAS, the six-month period from March 15, 1919, 27 through September 16, 1919, can be described as the 28 -1- LSB 2775XS (2) 88 mo/rn 1/ 2
S.R. 11 formation period of the American Legion in Iowa; and 1 WHEREAS, the centennial of the commencement of 2 that six-month formation period will begin in March 3 2019; NOW THEREFORE, 4 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate hereby 5 recognizes the centennial of the six-month formation 6 period of the American Legion in Iowa; and 7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this 8 Resolution be transmitted to Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds 9 for appropriate proclamation and execution and to 10 Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate for appropriate 11 publication and preservation. 12 -2- LSB 2775XS (2) 88 mo/rn 2/ 2
