Senate Resolution 107 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 107 BY NUNN , EDLER , DOTZLER , KAPUCIAN , and KINNEY A Resolution reaffirming commitment to strengthening 1 and deepening of the sister ties between the State 2 of Iowa and Taiwan, supporting Taiwan’s signing of 3 a Bilateral Trade Agreement with the United States, 4 and continuing support for increasing Taiwan’s 5 international profile. 6 WHEREAS, in 1989, the State of Iowa established the 7 sister state relationship with the Taiwan Province, 8 Republic of China (Taiwan), and Iowa and Taiwan 9 have enjoyed strong bilateral trade, educational and 10 cultural exchange, and tourism; and 11 WHEREAS, Taiwan shares the same values of freedom, 12 democracy, human rights, the rule of law, peace, and 13 prosperity with the United States and the State of 14 Iowa; and 15 WHEREAS, the United States ranks as Taiwan’s second 16 largest trading partner, Taiwan ranks as the eleventh 17 largest trading partner of the United States, and 18 bilateral trade reached $76.3 billion in 2018; and 19 WHEREAS, Taiwan and the State of Iowa have enjoyed 20 a long and mutually beneficial relationship with the 21 prospect of future growth and Taiwan was Iowa’s fifth 22 largest export market in Asia in 2018, with $208 23 million worth of Iowa goods exported to Taiwan; and 24 WHEREAS, negotiations for a Bilateral Trade 25 Agreement (BTA) between Taiwan and the United States 26 are an important step toward further strengthening 27 bilateral trade between our countries, thereby 28 -1- LSB 6374SS (2) 88 kh/tm 1/ 3
S.R. 107 increasing Iowa’s exports to Taiwan and creating 1 bilateral investment and technical collaboration 2 through tariff reduction and other trade facilitation 3 measures; and 4 WHEREAS, Taiwan has undertaken a policy of 5 “steadfast diplomacy” in its international 6 relations; and 7 WHEREAS, Taiwan is capable of, and willing to, 8 fulfilling its responsibilities and collaborating with 9 the world to deal with the challenges of humanitarian 10 aid, disease control, and other challenges; NOW 11 THEREFORE, 12 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 13 reaffirms its commitment to the strengthening and 14 deepening of the sister ties between the State of Iowa 15 and Taiwan; and 16 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Senate endorses 17 Taiwan’s efforts to secure the signing of the BTA with 18 the United States and reiterates its support for a 19 closer economic and trade partnership between the State 20 of Iowa and Taiwan; and 21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Senate continues 22 to support Taiwan’s appropriate participation in 23 international organizations which impact the health, 24 safety, and well-being of the people of Taiwan and 25 supports Taiwan’s aspiration to make more contributions 26 in international societies; and 27 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Secretary of the 28 Senate is hereby directed to transmit copies of this 29 resolution to the members of the Iowa Congressional 30 -2- LSB 6374SS (2) 88 kh/tm 2/ 3
