TAYLOR , COSTELLO , EDLER , DOTZLER , MILLER-MEEKS , LOFGREN , GIDDENS , and KOELKER A Resolution recognizing the centennial of the 1 formation of the American Legion Auxiliary. 2 WHEREAS, countless concerned women took on the 3 day-to-day responsibilities of life when family members 4 went overseas to fight in World War I; and 5 WHEREAS, aware of the many struggling families and 6 the needs of returning veterans, those same women vowed 7 to continue their roles after the veterans of World War 8 I founded the American Legion on March 5, 1919; and 9 WHEREAS, the American Legion Auxiliary, affiliated 10 with the American Legion, was organized November 10, 11 1919; and 12 WHEREAS, the American Legion Auxiliary is currently 13 a veterans’ service organization with members in nearly 14 10,000 American communities; and 15 WHEREAS, the American Legion Auxiliary raises 16 millions of dollars every year and uses these funds 17 to support programs in United States Department 18 of Veterans Affairs’ medical centers and community 19 programs; and 20 WHEREAS, the American Legion Auxiliary has created 21 and implemented numerous programs for veterans, their 22 families, young people, and the community at large; and 23 WHEREAS, American Legion Auxiliary volunteers 24 are integral to the operation of the United States 25 Department of Veterans Affairs’ medical centers, 26 -1- LSB 6312XS (2) 88 ja/rn 1/ 2
S.R. 104 providing diversion and entertainment for patients and 1 assisting with many therapeutic programs; and 2 WHEREAS, American Legion Auxiliary volunteers devote 3 thousands of hours to young women through the Girls 4 State program, Girls Nation program, and other youth 5 programs; and 6 WHEREAS, with the philosophy of “service, not 7 self,” the American Legion Auxiliary develops a strong 8 spirit of volunteerism in its members, who have joined 9 together in the fellowship of giving to others; and 10 WHEREAS, the American Legion Auxiliary embodies the 11 spirit of America that has prevailed through war and 12 peace and continues to stand firmly behind America 13 today; and 14 WHEREAS, the services of the American Legion 15 Auxiliary directly and indirectly touch the lives of 16 all Americans; NOW THEREFORE, 17 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate hereby 18 recognizes the centennial of the formation of the 19 American Legion Auxiliary; and 20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Senate honors 21 and extends its appreciation to the American Legion 22 Auxiliary for its many years of service to Iowans and 23 the country; and 24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Secretary of 25 the Senate is hereby directed to send copies of this 26 Resolution to Nicole Clapp, National President of the 27 American Legion Auxiliary, in Indianapolis, Indiana. 28 -2- LSB 6312XS (2) 88 ja/rn 2/ 2
