1.
Section
724.6,
Code
2019,
is
amended
to
read
as

follows:

724.6
Professional
permit
to
carry
weapons.
3
1.
a.
A
person
may
be
issued
a
permit
to
carry
weapons
when
4
the
person’s
employment
in
a
private
investigation
business
5
or
private
security
business
licensed
under
chapter
80A
,
or
a
6
person’s
employment
as
a
peace
officer,
correctional
officer,
7
county
attorney,
assistant
county
attorney,
security
guard,
8
bank
messenger
or
other
person
transporting
property
of
a
value
9
requiring
security,
or
in
police
work,
reasonably
justifies
10
that
person
going
armed.
11
b.
The
permit
shall
be
on
a
form
prescribed
and
published
12
by
the
commissioner
of
public
safety,
shall
identify
the
13
holder,
and
shall
state
the
nature
of
the
employment
requiring
14
the
holder
to
go
armed.
A
permit
so
issued,
other
than
to
15
a
peace
officer,
shall
authorize
the
person
to
whom
it
is
16
issued
to
go
armed
anywhere
in
the
state,
only
while
engaged
17
in
the
employment,
and
while
going
to
and
from
the
place
of
the
18
employment.

A
permit
issued
to
a
county
attorney
or
an
assistant
20
county
attorney
shall
authorize
that
county
attorney
or
21
assistant
county
attorney
to
go
armed
anywhere
in
the
state
22
at
all
times
except
on
the
grounds
of
a
school
or
beyond
a
23
security
screening
station
at
a
courthouse
subject
to
the
24
rules,
directives,
and
procedures
of
the
judicial
branch
and
25
the
judicial
district.

A
permit
issued
to
a
certified
peace
officer
shall
27
authorize
that
peace
officer
to
go
armed
anywhere
in
the
state
28
at
all
times,
including
on
the
grounds
of
a
school.

e.
Permits
shall
expire
twelve
months
after
the
date
30
when
issued
except
that
permits
issued
to
peace
officers
and
31
correctional
officers
,
county
attorneys,
and
assistant
county
32
attorneys
are
valid
through
the
officer’s
person’s
period
of
33
employment
unless
otherwise
canceled.
When
the
employment
is
34
terminated,
the
holder
of
the
permit
shall
surrender
it
to
the

issuing
officer
for
cancellation.

Notwithstanding
subsection
1
,
fire
fighters,
as
defined
2
in
section
411.1,
subsection
10
,
airport
fire
fighters
included
3
under
section
97B.49B
,
and
emergency
medical
care
providers,
4
as
defined
in
section
147A.1
,
county
attorneys,
as
defined
in
5
section
331.751,
and
assistant
county
attorneys,
as
defined
6
in
section
331.757
shall
not,
as
a
condition
of
employment,
7
be
required
to
obtain
a
permit
under
this
section
.
However,
8
the
provisions
of
this
subsection
shall
not
apply
to
a
person
9
designated
as
an
arson
investigator
by
the
chief
fire
officer
10
of
a
political
subdivision.

EXPLANATION

The
inclusion
of
this
explanation
does
not
constitute
agreement
with
13
the
explanation’s
substance
by
the
members
of
the
general
assembly.

Under
Code
section
724.6,
a
person
may
be
issued
a
15
professional
permit
to
carry
weapons
when
the
person’s
16
employment
in
a
private
investigation
business
or
private
17
security
business,
or
a
person’s
employment
as
a
peace
18
officer,
correctional
officer,
security
guard,
bank
messenger
19
or
other
person
transporting
property
of
a
value
requiring
20
security,
or
in
police
work,
reasonably
justifies
that
person
21
going
armed.
This
bill
amends
Code
section
724.6
to
allow
22
county
attorneys
and
assistant
county
attorneys
to
obtain
a
23
professional
permit
to
carry
weapons.
A
professional
permit
to
24
carry
weapons
issued
to
a
county
attorney
or
assistant
county
25
attorney
authorizes
that
person
to
go
armed
anywhere
in
the
26
state
at
all
times
except
on
the
grounds
of
a
school
or
beyond
27
a
security
screening
station
at
a
courthouse
subject
to
the
28
rules,
directives,
and
procedures
of
the
judicial
branch
and
29
the
judicial
district.
Permits
issued
to
county
attorneys
and
30
assistant
county
attorneys
are
valid
through
that
person’s
31
period
of
employment
unless
otherwise
cancelled.
The
bill
32
provides
that
county
attorneys
and
assistant
county
attorneys,

as
a
