DISCONTINUATION
OF
1
COAL
FOR
ELECTRICITY
PRODUCTION.
The
utilities
board
of
2
the
utilities
division
of
the
department
of
commerce
shall
3
conduct
a
study
assessing
the
economic
impact
of
discontinuing
4
the
use
of
coal
for
electricity
production
in
the
state
by
5
calendar
year
2035.
The
study
shall
require
the
board
to
6
conduct
contested
case
proceedings
of
rate-regulated
electric
7
utilities
in
the
state
that
use
coal
to
generate
electricity
8
and
shall
assess
the
economic
impact
of
the
discontinuation
by
9
assuming
that
future
energy
production
needs
are
met
through
10
renewable
sources,
compared
to
the
continued
use
of
coal
and
11
other
nonrenewable
sources.
The
board
shall
submit
a
report
12
regarding
the
results
of
the
study,
including
its
findings
and
13
recommendations,
to
the
general
assembly
and
the
governor
by
14
July
1,
2021.

the
members

the

assembly.

This
bill
requires
the
Iowa
utilities
board
to
conduct
a
19
study
assessing
the
economic
impact
of
discontinuing
coal
use
20
for
electricity
production
in
Iowa
by
2035.
The
board
shall
21
conduct
contested
case
proceedings
of
rate-regulated
electric
22
utilities
that
use
coal
and
shall
assume
that
future
production
23
needs
are
met
through
renewable
sources,
compared
to
coal
and
24
other
nonrenewable
sources.
The
board
shall
submit
a
report,
25
including
its
findings
and
recommendations,
to
the
general
26
assembly
and
the
governor
by
July
1,
2021.
