Section
1.
Section
279.10,
subsection
1,
Code
2019,
is
1
amended
to
read
as
follows:
2
1.
The
school
year
for
each
school
district
and
accredited
3
nonpublic
school
shall
begin
on
July
1
and
the
school
calendar
4
shall
begin
no
sooner
than
the
Monday
following
the
last
day
on
5
which
the
annual
fair
and
exhibition
is
held
by
the
Iowa
state
6
fair
board
pursuant
to
chapter
173,
or
August
23
,
whichever
is
7
earlier,
and
no
later
than
the
first
Monday
in
December.
The
8
school
calendar
shall
include
not
less
than
one
hundred
eighty
9
days
or
one
thousand
eighty
hours
of
instruction
during
the
10
calendar
year.
The
board
of
directors
of
a
school
district
and
11
the
authorities
in
charge
of
an
accredited
nonpublic
school
12
shall
determine
the
school
start
date
for
the
school
calendar
13
in
accordance
with
this
subsection
and
shall
set
the
number
14
of
days
or
hours
of
required
attendance
for
the
school
year
15
as
provided
in
section
299.1,
subsection
2
,
but
the
board
of
16
directors
of
a
school
district
shall
hold
a
public
hearing
17
on
any
proposed
school
calendar
prior
to
adopting
the
school
18
calendar.
If
the
board
of
directors
of
a
district
or
the
19
authorities
in
charge
of
an
accredited
nonpublic
school
extends
20
the
school
calendar
because
inclement
weather
caused
the
school
21
district
or
accredited
nonpublic
school
to
temporarily
close
22
during
the
regular
school
calendar,
the
school
district
or
23
accredited
nonpublic
school
may
excuse
a
graduating
senior
24
who
has
met
district
or
school
requirements
for
graduation
25
from
attendance
during
the
extended
school
calendar.
A
school
26
corporation
may
begin
employment
of
personnel
for
in-service
27
training
and
development
purposes
before
the
date
to
begin
28
elementary
and
secondary
school.

Sec.
2.
EFFECTIVE
DATE.
This
Act,
being
deemed
of
immediate
30
importance,
takes
effect
upon
enactment.

EXPLANATION

The
inclusion
of
this
explanation
does
not
constitute
agreement
with

the
explanation’s
substance
by
the
members
of
the
general
assembly.

This
