SMITH , BENNETT , OLSON , and EHLERT A Resolution recognizing and congratulating the 1 Kirkwood Community College basketball team on 2 winning the 2019 National Junior College Athletic 3 Association Division II national basketball 4 tournament. 5 WHEREAS, on March 23, 2019, the Kirkwood Community 6 College Eagles (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) defeated the 7 Johnson County Community College Cavaliers (Overland 8 Park, Kansas) in the championship game of the National 9 Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II 10 national basketball tournament; and 11 WHEREAS, Kirkwood entered the NJCAA Division 12 II national basketball tournament as the number 1 13 seed; and 14 WHEREAS, Kirkwood’s championship victory was led by 15 Doug Wilson, who scored a game-high 30 points along 16 with 15 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 blocked shots; and 17 WHEREAS, Wilson was designated the Most Valuable 18 Player of the 2019 NJCAA Division II national 19 basketball tournament; the 2019 Spalding NJCAA National 20 Player of the Year; the 2019 NJCAA Region XI Player 21 of the Year; the 2019 NJCAA Region XI Tournament 22 Most Valuable Player; and was named to the 2019 NJCAA 23 Division II All-American Team, the 2019 NJCAA Division 24 II National Tournament All-Tournament Team, the 2019 25 -1- LSB 2825HH (4) 88 mo/rn 1/ 2
H.R. 24 Region XI All-Tournament Team, and the 2019 All-Region 1 First Team; and 2 WHEREAS, along with Wilson, Kirkwood’s Allante 3 Pickens and Devonte Thedford were also named to 4 the 2019 NJCAA Division II National Tournament 5 All-Tournament Team; and 6 WHEREAS, Pickens was named to the 2019 All-Region 7 First Team; Kirkwood’s Connor Kasperbauer and Thedford 8 were named to the 2019 All-Region team as honorable 9 mentions; and Kirkwood’s Luke Appel was named to the 10 2019 All-Region Second Team; and 11 WHEREAS, Kirkwood is currently coached by Bryan 12 Petersen who, in his sixth season, has compiled a 13 157-38 career record and a perfect 8-0 record in his 14 two appearances at the NJCAA Division II national 15 basketball tournament, and has been named the 2019 16 Spalding NJCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Coach of 17 the Year; and 18 WHEREAS, Kirkwood finished its season with a 31-4 19 record and the third national championship in its 20 basketball program history (1998, 2016, 2019); NOW 21 THEREFORE, 22 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 23 That the House of Representatives recognizes and 24 congratulates the Kirkwood Community College basketball 25 team for its outstanding basketball season this year, 26 including its championship victory at the 2019 National 27 Junior College Athletic Association Division II 28 national basketball tournament. 29 -2- LSB 2825HH (4) 88 mo/rn 2/ 2
