Senate Resolution 15 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 15 BY BOULTON A Resolution recognizing and congratulating the Drake 1 University women’s basketball team and program on 2 its outstanding regional and national athletic 3 achievements. 4 WHEREAS, the Drake University women’s basketball 5 team (the Bulldogs) secured its first outright Missouri 6 Valley Conference (MVC) regular season championship 7 since the 1999-2000 season with a 70-57 win over the 8 University of Northern Iowa on February 24, 2017, in 9 Des Moines, Iowa; and 10 WHEREAS, the Bulldogs became the first team to go 11 undefeated in MVC regular-season play with a 105-89 12 victory over Wichita State on March 4, 2017, in Des 13 Moines, Iowa; and 14 WHEREAS, that victory also gave the Bulldogs a 15 13-0 home record, becoming the second team in program 16 history to go unbeaten at home; and 17 WHEREAS, the Bulldogs won their sixth MVC tournament 18 title with a 74-69 overtime win over the University 19 of Northern Iowa on March 12, 2017, in Moline, 20 Illinois; and 21 WHEREAS, that victory completed an unprecedented 22 season for the Bulldogs with a perfect 18-0 MVC record 23 and a 22-game winning streak, the second-longest such 24 streak in the nation; and 25 WHEREAS, that victory also earned the Bulldogs the 26 MVC’s automatic bid to the National Collegiate Athletic 27 Association (NCAA) women’s basketball tournament; and 28 -1- LSB 2679XS (5) 87 rn/rj 1/ 2
S.R. 15 WHEREAS, Drake senior Lizzy Wendell was named the 1 2017 Jackie Stiles MVC Women’s Basketball Player of 2 the Year, freshman Becca Hittner was chosen the MVC 3 Freshman of the Year, and head coach Jennie Baranczyk 4 was named the MVC Coach of the Year; and 5 WHEREAS, the Bulldogs entered the NCAA tournament 6 for the eleventh time in the program’s history; and 7 WHEREAS, the Bulldogs’ historic season ended in 8 the first round of the tournament with a 67-54 loss 9 to Kansas State on March 18, 2017, in Manhattan, 10 Kansas; and 11 WHEREAS, the loss was the Bulldogs’ first loss 12 since December 21, 2016, and left the team with a 28-5 13 overall record; and 14 WHEREAS, those 28 victories tied the all-time single 15 season total in program history with the 1978-1979 and 16 1981-1982 teams; and 17 WHEREAS, Lizzy Wendell was named an honorable 18 mention All-American by the Associated Press on 19 March 27, 2017, becoming only the second player in 20 program history to earn Associated Press All-America 21 honors; NOW THEREFORE, 22 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 23 recognizes and congratulates the Drake University 24 women’s basketball team and program on its outstanding 25 regional and national athletic achievements; and 26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this 27 Resolution be sent to Drake University Women’s 28 Basketball Team Head Coach Jennie Baranczyk and Drake 29 University President Earl F.
