Senate Resolution 110 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 110 BY BOWMAN A Resolution celebrating the 150th birthday of 1 Robert A. Millikan by recognizing his significant 2 contributions to the field of physics. 3 WHEREAS, Dr. Millikan was born on March 22, 1868, in 4 Morrison, Illinois; and 5 WHEREAS, Dr. Millikan’s family moved to McGregor, 6 Iowa, in 1873 and Maquoketa, Iowa, in 1875; and 7 WHEREAS, Dr. Millikan graduated from Maquoketa High 8 School in 1885; and 9 WHEREAS, Dr. Millikan considered growing up in 10 Maquoketa to play a major role in his life, stating 11 in his autobiography, “I regarded Maquoketa as pretty 12 nearly an ideal town in which to be brought up”; and 13 WHEREAS, Dr. Millikan went on to study physics at 14 Columbia University and the Universities of Berlin and 15 Gottingen in Germany; and 16 WHEREAS, Dr. Millikan’s experiments led to many 17 important discoveries in the fields of electromagnetism 18 and particle physics, including accurately determining 19 the charge carried by an electron and proving 20 that quantity to be constant, and verifying Albert 21 Einstein’s photoelectric equation while making the 22 first direct photoelectric determination of Max 23 Planck’s constant “h” ; and 24 WHEREAS, Dr. Millikan won the Nobel Prize in Physics 25 in 1923 “for his work on the elementary charge of 26 electricity and on the photoelectric effect”; NOW 27 THEREFORE, 28 -1- LSB 6211XS (4) 87 js/rn 1/ 2
