JOHNSON A Resolution recognizing and congratulating Art Cullen 1 on winning the 2017 Pulitzer Prize in editorial 2 writing. 3 WHEREAS, Art Cullen is the editor of The Storm Lake 4 Times, a twice weekly newspaper with a circulation of 5 3,000; and 6 WHEREAS, Mr. Cullen has written for The Storm Lake 7 Times since its founding in 1990, writing hundreds of 8 editorials on all manner of topics of public interest 9 to Iowans; and 10 WHEREAS, Mr. Cullen was awarded the 2017 Pulitzer 11 Prize in editorial writing, with a prize of $15,000, 12 for his editorials on environmental matters in Buena 13 Vista, Calhoun, and Sac counties; and 14 WHEREAS, Mr. Cullen is one of only six Iowans to win 15 the Pulitzer Prize in editorial writing; and 16 WHEREAS, the Pulitzer Prize Board praised Mr. 17 Cullen’s work as “fueled by tenacious reporting, 18 impressive expertise and engaging writing that 19 successfully challenged powerful corporate agricultural 20 interests in Iowa”; and 21 WHEREAS, Mr. Cullen in his writing has always 22 shown a strong passion for sound environmental and 23 agricultural policy in Iowa; and 24 WHEREAS, Mr. Cullen has shown an admirable 25 commitment to furthering journalism in Iowa, with the 26 philosophy that “The Storm Lake Times should be as good 27 at covering Storm Lake as the New York Times is at 28 -1- LSB 5839XS (5) 87 je/rj 1/ 2
