Designation
of
stroke

centers
and
acute
stroke-ready
hospitals.

1.
The
department
shall
recognize
as
an
acute
stroke-ready
3
hospital,
an
accredited
acute
care
hospital
that
applies
for
4
and
receives
certification
as
an
acute
stroke-ready
hospital
5
from
the
joint
commission
on
the
accreditation
of
health
care
6
organizations
or
another
certifying
entity
that
is
a
nationally
7
recognized
guidelines-based
organization
that
provides
acute
8
stroke-ready
hospital
certification
for
stroke
care,
if
the
9
accredited
acute
care
hospital
is
in
good
standing
with
and
10
maintains
certification
through
such
a
national
certifying
11
organization.

The
department
shall
recognize
as
a
primary
stroke
13
center,
an
accredited
acute
care
hospital
that
applies
for
14
and
receives
certification
as
a
primary
stroke
center
from
15
the
joint
commission
on
the
accreditation
of
health
care
16
organizations
or
another
certifying
entity
that
is
a
nationally
17
recognized
guidelines-based
organization
that
provides
primary
18
stroke
center
hospital
certification
for
stroke
care,
if
the
19
accredited
acute
care
hospital
is
in
good
standing
with
and
20
maintains
certification
through
such
a
national
certifying
21
organization.

The
department
shall
recognize
as
a
comprehensive
stroke

center,
an
accredited
acute
care
hospital
that
applies
for
24
and
receives
certification
as
a
comprehensive
stroke
center
25
from
the
joint
commission
on
the
accreditation
of
health
26
care
organizations
or
another
certifying
entity
that
is
a
27
nationally
recognized
guidelines-based
organization
that
28
provides
comprehensive
stroke
center
hospital
certification
29
for
stroke
care,
if
the
accredited
acute
care
hospital
is
in
30
good
standing
with
and
maintains
certification
through
such
a

national
certifying
organization.

The
department
shall
appropriately
recognize

comprehensive
and
primary
stroke
centers
that
attain
a
level

of
stroke
care
distinction
from
the

commission
on

accreditation
of
health
care
organizations
or
other

that
is
a
nationally
recognized
guidelines-based

organization,
including
but
not
limited
to
those

stroke
care
distinction
for
offering
mechanical

endovascular
therapies.

EXPLANATION

The
inclusion
of
this
explanation
does
not
constitute
agreement
with

the
explanation’s
substance
by
the
members
of
the
general
assembly.

This
bill
relates
to
stroke-related
care.

The
bill
requires
recognition
by
the
department
of
public
10
health
(DPH)
of
acute
stroke-ready
hospitals,
primary
11
stroke
centers
and
comprehensive
stroke
centers,
based
upon
12
accreditation
by
a
nationally
recognized
entity
for
the
13
applicable
level
of
certification,
if
the
accredited
acute
care
14
hospital
is
in
good
standing
with
and
maintains
certification
15
through
such
a
national
certifying
entity.
16
The
bill
also
requires
DPH
to
appropriately
recognize
17
comprehensive
and
primary
stroke
centers
that
attain
a
level
18
of
stroke
care
distinction
from
specified
national
accrediting
19
entities,
including
but
not
limited
to
those
attaining
a
level
20
of
stroke
care
distinction
for
offering
mechanical
endovascular
21
therapies.
