House Resolution 8 - Introduced HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 8 BY COWNIE A Resolution recognizing National Speech and Debate 1 Education Day. 2 WHEREAS, National Speech and Debate Education 3 Day was established by the National Speech & Debate 4 Association, in conjunction with national and local 5 partners, as an event to promote better instruction 6 in speech and debate across all grade levels and to 7 highlight the pivotal roles speech and debate have in 8 advancing personal advocacy, social movements, and 9 public policy making; and 10 WHEREAS, speech and debate education helps students 11 develop important skills in communication, critical 12 thinking, creativity, and collaboration through the 13 practice of public speaking; participants learn not 14 only to analyze and express complex ideas effectively 15 but also to listen, concur, question, or dissent with 16 reason and compassion; and 17 WHEREAS, across the country, countless educators 18 devote in-school, after-school, and weekend time 19 to supporting their students in speech and debate 20 practices and competitions, and the example of hard 21 work and dedication they set has a lasting, positive 22 impact on their pupils; and 23 WHEREAS, the skills learned through speech and 24 debate serve students well throughout their lives, 25 and this occasion presents a welcome opportunity to 26 recognize such instruction as an essential component of 27 a well-rounded curriculum; NOW THEREFORE, 28 -1- LSB 1886YH (2) 87 kh/nh 1/ 2
