WHEREAS,
the
Southwestern
Community
College
men’s

basketball
team
(the
Spartans)
broke
a
school
record

for
wins
in
a
season
with
a
36-1
record
for
the

2016-2017
basketball
season;
and
8
WHEREAS,
the
Spartans
held
the
number
one
ranking
9
in
the
National
Junior
College
Athlete
Association
10
(NJCAA)
National
Polls
for
six
weeks,
including
the
11
final
regular
season
poll;
and
12
WHEREAS,
the
Spartans
won
the
regular
season
and
13
postseason
NJCAA
Division
II
Region
XI
Champion
title,
14
qualifying
for
their
first
national
tournament
trip
15
since
1999;
and
16
WHEREAS,
the
Spartans
secured
their
first
national
17
championship
with
a
77-53
win
over
Louisburg
College
on
18
March
25,
2017,
in
Danville,
Illinois;
and
19
WHEREAS,
that
victory
gave
the
Spartans
the
title
20
of
2017
NJCAA
Division
II
National
Men’s
Basketball
21
Champions;
and
22
WHEREAS,
freshman
Broderic
Thomas,
sophomore
KeShawn
23
Wilson,
and
sophomore
Jordan
Johnson
were
voted
onto
24
the
NJCAA
Division
II
All
Region
First
Team;
and
25
WHEREAS,
nine
players
on
the
Spartan
team
were
named
26
to
NJCAA
Division
II
Academic
All
Region
Teams;
and
27
WHEREAS,
Head
Coach
Todd
Lorensen
was
named
NJCAA
