House Resolution 12 - Introduced HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 12 BY STAED A Resolution encouraging each Iowa school district to 1 establish student liaisons to its school board. 2 WHEREAS, student liaisons can benefit school boards 3 by providing student perspectives and observations to 4 the school board; and 5 WHEREAS, encouraging students to advocate for 6 student interests at school board meetings through 7 a student liaison engages students in the education 8 policies that affect students’ daily lives and can 9 potentially lead to positive changes in school district 10 policies and procedures; and 11 WHEREAS, involving students as school board 12 liaisons affords such students the opportunity to gain 13 meaningful experience in local politics, to increase 14 their civic engagement, and to make them effective, 15 upstanding citizens; and 16 WHEREAS, student liaisons can provide school 17 administration and school board members with an 18 accurate picture of student life and describe from the 19 student viewpoint the effects school board actions have 20 on the students enrolled in the district; and 21 WHEREAS, the Governor’s appointment of a nonvoting 22 student member of the Iowa Board of Education offers 23 a working example of the benefits of fostering 24 student participation in the process of developing and 25 monitoring the implementation of education policy; NOW 26 THEREFORE, 27 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, That 28 -1- LSB 1039YH (2) 87 kh/rj 1/ 2
