recognizing
the
many

accomplishments
of
Dr.
Peggy
Whitson.

WHEREAS,
Peggy
Annette
Whitson,
who
was
born
in
3
Mount
Ayr,
Iowa,
and
grew
up
on
a
family
farm
near
4
Beaconsfield,
was
initially
inspired
to
be
a
space
5
explorer
at
the
age
of
nine
watching
Neil
Armstrong
and
6
Buzz
Aldrin
take
their
first
steps
on
the
moon;
and
7
WHEREAS,
following
high
school,
Dr.
Whitson
designed
8
her
education
goals
to
be
consistent
with
a
career
9
at
the
National
Aeronautics
and
Space
Administration
10
(NASA),
by
receiving
her
bachelor
of
science
degree
in
11
biology
and
chemistry
from
Iowa
Wesleyan
College
in
12
1981,
and
by
receiving
her
doctorate
in
biochemistry
13
from
Rice
University
in
1985;
and
14
WHEREAS,
after
persistently
applying
for
the
15
astronaut
program
five
times
over
the
course
of
16
10
years,
Dr.
Whitson
was
selected
as
an
astronaut
17
candidate
in
1996;
and
18
WHEREAS,
Dr.
Whitson
first
flew
into
space
on
June
19
5,
2002,
as
a
flight
engineer
for
Expedition
5,
and
20
subsequently
was
a
member
of
the
Expedition
16
crew
21
that
launched
on
October
10,
2007;
and
22
WHEREAS,
when
Dr.
Whitson’s
most
recent
mission
23
as
a
member
of
Expedition
50/51/52
ended
in
September

she
had
spent
over
289
days
in
orbit,
and
had
1
cumulatively
spent
over
665
days
during
her
three

missions
aboard
the
International
Space
Station,

more
time
living
and
working
in
space
than
any

other
American
or
any
woman
worldwide,
earning
her
5
the
nickname
“Space
Ninja”
and
the
Twitter
handle
6
“@AstroPeggy”;
and
7
WHEREAS,
Dr.
Whitson
has
broken
many
barriers,
set
8
many
other
records,
earned
accolades
too
numerous
to
9
mention,
and
been
a
role
model,
encouraging
audiences,
10
like
the
girls
and
young
women
from
the
Lower
East
Side
11
Girls
Club
and
other
nonprofit
groups
in
attendance
12
when
she
was
named
one
of
Glamour’s
Women
of
the
Year
13
in
2017,
to
find
their
passion
and
achieve
their
goals;

NOW
THEREFORE,

BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
HOUSE
OF
REPRESENTATIVES,
That
16
the
House
of
Representatives
congratulates
Dr.
Peggy
17
Whitson
on
her
remarkable
lifetime
of
accomplishments;
18
commends
Dr.
Whitson
for
her
outstanding
contributions
19
to
the
advancement
of
international
cooperation
and
20
for
exemplifying
that
successful
endeavors
require
the
21
teamwork
of
those
with
diverse
skills
and
backgrounds
22
as
well
as
relationships
built
on
mutual
trust
and
23
respect,
whether
on
the
International
Space
Station
24
or
on
Earth;
and
thanks
Dr.
Whitson
for
steadfastly
25
promoting
interest
in
STEM
and
inspiring
both
girls,
26
and
boys,
no
matter
the
size
of
their
hometown,
to
27
dream
big,
work
hard,
and
reach
for
the
(moon
and)

stars.
