SMITH , WHEELER , NIELSEN , CARLSON , KRESSIG , BERGAN , JACOBY , STAED , FORBES , McCONKEY , BROWN-POWERS , OLSON , HEDDENS , PRICHARD , RUNNING-MARQUARDT , ABDUL-SAMAD , and FINKENAUER A Resolution honoring and commemorating the city of 1 Buxton. 2 WHEREAS, in 1873, a new city was founded in Iowa by 3 Ben Buxton for the purpose of housing laborers to mine 4 coal for the Consolidated Coal Company; and 5 WHEREAS, the Consolidated Coal Company recruited 6 African American laborers from Iowa, Virginia, 7 Kentucky, and Tennessee; and 8 WHEREAS, in addition, the city also hosted white 9 laborers from Australia and across Europe; and 10 WHEREAS, the businesses and organizations of the 11 city of Buxton did not discriminate against any citizen 12 on the basis of race; and 13 WHEREAS, the people of the city of Buxton were 14 served by a number of prominent African American 15 professionals, including physician Dr. E.A. H.R. 104 Woodson and Samuel Joe Brown; and 1 WHEREAS, the city of Buxton stood as a model of 2 cooperation and respect among people of diverse 3 heritages and backgrounds; and 4 WHEREAS, the last Buxton coal mine closed in 1927, 5 leading to the town’s abandonment; NOW THEREFORE, 6 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 7 That the House of Representatives hereby honors and 8 commemorates the city of Buxton and encourages all 9 Iowans to recall the spirit of unity and harmony 10 embodied by the people of the city of Buxton. 11 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this 12 resolution be sent to the Monroe County Historical 13 Board. 14 -2- LSB 5606YH (6) 87 ss/rn 2/ 2
