Senate Resolution 112 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 112 BY DOTZLER A Resolution commending the results of Taiwan’s 2016 1 presidential election reaffirming support for 2 increasing Taiwan’s international profile and 3 for strengthening and expanding sister-state ties 4 between Iowa and Taiwan. 5 WHEREAS, the State of Iowa is proud of the 6 sister-state relationship it has enjoyed with 7 Taiwan since 1989, marked by strong bilateral trade, 8 educational and cultural exchange, and tourism; and 9 WHEREAS, Taiwan shares the values of freedom, 10 democracy, human rights, rule of law, peace, and 11 prosperity with the United States and the State of 12 Iowa; and 13 WHEREAS, on January 16, 2016, Taiwan held its sixth 14 direct presidential election, demonstrating again the 15 strength and vitality of its democratic system and 16 confirming that Taiwan is a beacon of democracy in the 17 Asia-Pacific region and beyond; and 18 WHEREAS, Taiwan is seeking to contribute to greater 19 regional integration in the Asia-Pacific region and 20 promote bilateral investment and trade relations with 21 the United States; NOW THEREFORE, 22 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 23 commends and supports Taiwan’s mature and 24 vital democracy, its continued pursuit of trade 25 liberalization for further integration with the United 26 States and other trade partners, and its participation 27 in international organizations which impact the health, 28 -1- LSB 6085XS (2) 86 rn/nh 1/ 2
