SENATE
RESOLUTION
NO.

BY
SCHNEIDER
A
Resolution
to
declare
March
11,
2016,
as
1
Fibromuscular
Dysplasia
Awareness
Day.
2
WHEREAS,
Fibromuscular
Dysplasia
(FMD)
is
a
disease
3
that
causes
abnormal
cell
growth
of
the
arterial
wall
4
leading
to
areas
of
narrowing,
beading,
aneurysms,
and
5
tears
of
the
arterial
wall;
and
6
WHEREAS,
although
FMD
was
first
diagnosed
in
1938,
7
until
recently
there
has
been
very
little
progress
in
8
understanding
the
disease,
there
is
no
known
cause
or
9
cure
for
the
disease,
and
there
are
no
set
protocols
10
to
treat
the
disease;
and
11
WHEREAS,
even
though
FMD
has
always
been
considered
12
and
is
still
classified
as
a
rare
disease,
many
13
researchers
now
believe
FMD
to
be
underdiagnosed
14
with
some
data
suggesting
that
4
to
5
percent
of
the
15
population
may
be
affected
by
the
disease;
and
16
WHEREAS,
while
men
and
children
may
also
have
17
FMD,
90
percent
of
the
patients
affected
by
FMD
are
18
women;
and
19
WHEREAS,
although
there
are
several
different
20
classifications
of
FMD,
the
two
most
common
types
are
21
medial
fibroplasia
and
intimal
fibroplasia,
with
some
22
patients
presenting
with
both
types
of
the
disease,
and
23
different
populations
being
diagnosed
with
different
24
types
of
the
disease;
and
25
WHEREAS,
unlike
the
adult
population,
children
tend
26
to
be
diagnosed
with
intimal
fibroplasia,
which
can
be
27
more
aggressive;

105
WHEREAS,
FMD
may
often
go
undetected
since

patients
with
FMD
present
with
symptoms
common
to
2
other
disorders
such
as
hypertension,
headaches,
and
3
dizziness;
others
present
with
transient
ischemic
4
attack
(TIA)
or
stroke,
tearing
of
an
artery,
aneurysm,
5
swooshing
noise
in
the
ear,
and
renal
infarction;
6
children
may
present
with
basic
symptoms
such
as
high
7
blood
pressure,
headaches,
insomnia,
fatigue,
and
8
abdominal
pain;
and
others
may
be
asymptomatic;
and
9
WHEREAS,
those
with
FMD
may
have
difficulty
in
10
obtaining
an
accurate
and
timely
diagnosis
with
the
11
common
delay
from
onset
of
symptoms
to
diagnosis
being
12
five
years,
or
may
be
misdiagnosed
leading
to
severe
13
consequences
and
disability;
and
14
WHEREAS,
in
addition
to
a
lack
of
diagnosis
or
15
misdiagnosis,
individuals
and
families
affected
by
16
FMD
often
experience
isolation,
the
lack
of
optimal
17
treatment
options,
and
inaccuracy
of
information
about
18
the
disease
which,
prior
to
the
release
of
the
newest
19
data,
inaccurately
indicated
that
75
percent
of
FMD
20
cases
affected
the
renal
arteries;
and
21
WHEREAS,
while
many
rare
diseases
are
relatively
22
well-known,
FMD
is
not
well-known
by
