Interscholastic
athletic

competitions

academic
ineligibility.

A
student
who
is
a
contestant
in
interscholastic
athletic
3
contests
or
competitions
and
who
is
given
a
failing
grade
at
4
the
end
of
any
grading
period
in
any
course
for
which
credit
5
is
awarded
shall
be
ineligible
to
dress
for
and
compete
in
6
the
next
occurring
interscholastic
athletic
contests
and
7
competitions
in
which
the
student
is
a
contestant
for
a
period
8
of
time
equal
to
one-third
of
the
applicable
interscholastic
9
athletic
season.
For
purposes
of
this
section,
“grading
period”
10
means
the
period
of
time
at
the
end
of
which
a
student
in
grades
11
nine
through
twelve
receives
a
final
grade
and
course
credit
12
is
awarded
for
passing
grades.

EXPLANATION

The
inclusion
of
this
explanation
does
not
constitute
agreement
with
15
the
explanation’s
substance
by
the
members
of
the
general
assembly.

This
bill
provides
that
a
student
who
is
a
contestant
in
17
interscholastic
athletic
contests
or
competitions
and
who
is
18
given
a
failing
grade
at
the
end
of
any
grading
period
in
any
19
course
for
which
credit
is
awarded
shall
be
ineligible
to
dress
20
for
and
compete
in
the
next
occurring
interscholastic
athletic
21
contests
and
competitions
in
which
the
student
is
a
contestant
22
for
a
period
of
time
equal
to
one-third
of
the
applicable
23
interscholastic
athletic
season.
24
Administrative
rules
adopted
by
the
state
department
of
25
education
currently
provide
that
such
a
period
of
ineligibility
26
shall
last
for
30
consecutive
calendar
days.
