S.F. 253 Section 1. NEW SECTION . 280.13D Interscholastic athletic 1 contests and competitions —— academic eligibility —— English as 2 a second language. 3 A student in an English as a second language program shall 4 not be denied eligibility to participate in interscholastic 5 athletic contests or competitions on the basis of academic 6 performance if the student is making adequate progress, as 7 determined by the student’s school, toward the goals and 8 objectives in the student’s English as a second language 9 program. 10 EXPLANATION 11 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 12 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 13 This bill prohibits denying a student in an English as 14 a second language program eligibility to participate in 15 interscholastic athletic contests or competitions on the basis 16 of academic performance if the student is making adequate 17 progress, as determined by the student’s school, toward the 18 goals and objectives in the student’s English as a second 19 language program. 20 -1- LSB 2133XS (3) 86 je/rj 1/ 1
