S.F. 2026 Section 1. Section 481A.48, subsection 5, Code 2016, is 1 amended to read as follows: 2 5. a. The commission shall establish one or more pistol 3 or revolver seasons for hunting deer as separate firearm 4 seasons or to coincide with one or more other firearm deer 5 hunting seasons. Any pistol or revolver firing a magnum 6 three hundred fifty-seven thousandths of one inch caliber or 7 larger, centerfire, straight wall ammunition propelling an 8 expanding-type bullet is legal for hunting deer during the 9 pistol or revolver seasons. The commission shall adopt rules 10 to allow black powder pistols or revolvers for hunting deer. 11 The rules shall not allow pistols or revolvers with shoulder 12 stock or long-barrel modifications. The barrel length of a 13 pistol or revolver used for deer hunting shall be at least four 14 inches. The rules may limit types of ammunition. A person 15 who is sixteen years of age or less shall not hunt deer with a 16 pistol or revolver. 17 b. A person with a valid permit to carry weapons pursuant to 18 section 724.7 may possess a pistol or revolver pursuant to that 19 permit while hunting deer. However, a person shall not use a 20 pistol or revolver to hunt deer unless the pistol or revolver 21 meets the requirements of paragraph “a” and the person has a 22 valid hunting license with an unfilled tag that permits use of 23 that pistol or revolver to hunt. 24 c. A person possessing using a prohibited pistol or revolver 25 while hunting to hunt deer in violation of this subsection 26 commits a scheduled violation under section 805.8B, subsection 27 3 , paragraph “h” , subparagraph (5). 28 Sec. 2. Section 805.8B, subsection 3, paragraph h, 29 subparagraph (5), Code 2016, is amended to read as follows: 30 (5) Possession Use of a prohibited pistol or revolver 31 while hunting to hunt deer, the scheduled fine is one hundred 32 dollars. 33 EXPLANATION 34 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 35 -1- LSB 5369XS (3) 86 av/nh 1/ 2

S.F. 2026 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 1 This bill amends Code section 481A.48(5) to provide that 2 a person with a valid permit to carry weapons may possess a 3 pistol or revolver pursuant to that permit while hunting deer. 4 However, a person shall not use a pistol or revolver to hunt 5 deer unless the pistol or revolver meets the specifications of 6 the statute and the person has a valid hunting license with an 7 unfilled tag that permits use of that pistol or revolver to 8 hunt deer.
