TAYLOR , DOLECHECK , and JORGENSEN A Resolution honoring Dr. Sally Mason and her 1 outstanding achievements as President of the 2 University of Iowa. 3 WHEREAS, in 2007, Dr. Mason was appointed the 20th 4 President of the University of Iowa after a remarkable 5 academic career as a researcher, professor, department 6 chair, dean, and provost at several other leading 7 Midwest universities; and 8 WHEREAS, in the following eight years, President 9 Mason has demonstrated exceptional resolve in leading 10 the University of Iowa through a devastating flood and 11 economic recession; and 12 WHEREAS, President Mason has provided national 13 leadership as a member of many prestigious 14 organizations including as Chair of the Association of 15 Public and Land-Grant Universities Board of Directors 16 and as Chair of the Big Ten Council of Presidents and 17 Chancellors; and 18 WHEREAS, President Mason has furthered the 19 -1- LSB 2181HH (5) 86 ns/rj 1/ 3
H.R. 23 development of the University of Iowa as a world-class 1 institution through many notable achievements 2 including: 3 1. Increased enrollment to 31,387 students in 2014. 4 2. Enhanced student success as indicated by 5 increased freshman retention rates, increased 6 four-year graduation rates, and increased 7 employment-after-graduation rates. 8 3. Prioritized student access to education by 9 offering debt counseling, expanding free tutoring 10 services, implementing a six-point plan to combat 11 sexual assault, expanding partnership agreements with 12 Iowa community colleges, enhancing distant learning 13 programs, providing free summer courses through Summer 14 Hawk Tuition Grants, and implementing programs to 15 assist first-generation and under-represented students. 16 4. Reinvigorated campus infrastructure by 17 overseeing the completion of more than 25 projects 18 including a state-of-the-art learning commons, the 19 Pappajohn Biomedical Discovery Building, the College of 20 Public Health Building, and the Campus Recreation and 21 Wellness Center. 22 5. Initiated new campus construction projects 23 which are not yet completed, including the Hancher 24 Auditorium replacement, the Art Building replacement, 25 the Mary Louise Petersen Residence Hall, the Voxman 26 Music Building, and the University of Iowa Children’s 27 Hospital; NOW THEREFORE, 28 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, That 29 the House of Representatives expresses its sincere 30 -2- LSB 2181HH (5) 86 ns/rj 2/ 3
