MILLER , HANSON , BERRY , BEARINGER , ANDERSON , STAED , KEARNS , OURTH , PRICHARD , STECKMAN , RUFF , HEDDENS , DAWSON , DUNKEL , OLDSON , WESSEL-KROESCHELL , KELLEY , FORBES , BROWN-POWERS , MEYER , LYKAM , JACOBY , and HALL A Resolution acknowledging the 150th anniversary of the 1 death of President Abraham Lincoln. 2 WHEREAS, the story of Abraham Lincoln and the 3 example of his life, including his inspiring rise from 4 humble origins to the highest office of the land and 5 his decisive leadership during the Civil War, continues 6 to bring hope and inspiration to millions of people in 7 the United States and around the world; and 8 WHEREAS, at the conclusion of the Civil War the 9 leaders of the United States decided to use the 10 life and memory of Abraham Lincoln, who had just 11 been assassinated, as a symbol of national unity and 12 forgiveness; and 13 WHEREAS, the fallen President’s administration 14 organized a funeral train that would follow a 15 modified version of the pathway taken by the then 16 President-elect on his way to Washington; and 17 WHEREAS, the train’s route from Washington to 18 Springfield, Illinois, traveled through both formerly 19 union and confederate states as a symbol of the 20 reunification of the country; and 21 WHEREAS, to enable as many Americans as possible 22 to pay tribute to Lincoln’s memory, the funeral 23 -1- LSB 1965YH (3) 86 rn/nh 1/ 2
H.R. 22 train’s route was modified to make stops in Baltimore, 1 Philadelphia, New York City, Albany, Buffalo, 2 Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis, and Chicago; and 3 WHEREAS, more than 1 million mourners lined the 4 train tracks, with tens of thousands attending casket 5 viewings held at principal railroad junctions on the 6 train route; and 7 WHEREAS, Lincoln’s funeral train, and his return 8 to Springfield, Illinois, are powerful symbols of the 9 desire of all Americans for peace, reconciliation, and 10 a search for sources of common inspiration to resolve 11 our social, political, and economic differences; NOW 12 THEREFORE, 13 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, That 14 the House of Representatives acknowledges the 150th 15 anniversary of the death of President Abraham Lincoln 16 on April 15, 1865. 17 -2- LSB 1965YH (3) 86 rn/nh 2/ 2
