House File 88 - Introduced HOUSE FILE 88 BY HEARTSILL A BILL FOR An Act defining occasional work for purposes of the state child 1 labor law. 2 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA: 3 TLSB 1526YH (4) 86 je/sc
H.F. 88 Section 1. Section 92.17, subsection 1, Code 2015, is 1 amended to read as follows: 2 1. Any part-time, occasional, or volunteer work for 3 nonprofit organizations generally recognized as educational, 4 charitable, religious, or community service in nature. For 5 purposes of this subsection, “occasional” means, unless 6 otherwise prohibited by federal law, a period lasting up to six 7 weeks, during which a child may work up to eight hours in one 8 day and up to forty hours in one week. A child under sixteen 9 years of age employed or volunteering outside school hours 10 shall not work more than four hours in a day in which school is 11 in session during such period. 12 EXPLANATION 13 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 14 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 15 The state child labor law currently does not prohibit a child 16 from any part-time, occasional, or volunteer work for nonprofit 17 organizations generally recognized as educational, charitable, 18 religious, or community service in nature. “Occasional” is 19 not defined in statute. This bill defines “occasional” for 20 purposes of work performed under this provision. 21 -1- LSB 1526YH (4) 86 je/sc 1/ 1
