H.F. 511 Section 1. NEW SECTION . 303.8A State historian designated. 1 1. The board of trustees of the state historical society 2 of Iowa shall select a list of three nominees for designation 3 as state historian, along with biographical and professional 4 information and supporting representative material, who are 5 residents of Iowa and who could promote an understanding 6 and appreciation of the history of this state. The list of 7 nominees shall be transmitted to the governor. The governor 8 shall select the state historian from the list of nominees for 9 a two-year term of office. The state historian is an honorary 10 state office and the incumbent is not entitled to compensation 11 as a result of the appointment. 12 2. At the announcement of the appointment of each new state 13 historian, the governor shall pay tribute to the contribution 14 that Dr. Dorothy Schwieder made to the understanding and 15 appreciation of the history of this state as a teacher, author, 16 and mentor. 17 EXPLANATION 18 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 19 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 20 This bill provides for the designation of a state historian. 21 Under the bill, the board of trustees of the state historical 22 society of Iowa shall compile a list of three nominees and 23 submit their names and supporting material to the governor. 24 The governor shall select from that list a state historian to 25 serve a two-year term. The state historian is not entitled to 26 compensation as a result of receiving the appointment.
