H.F. 2258 Section 1. Section 321.463, Code 2016, is amended by adding 1 the following new subsection: 2 NEW SUBSECTION . 13A. Notwithstanding this section or any 3 other provision of law to the contrary, a motor vehicle with 4 a gross weight of more than eighty thousand pounds traveling 5 on a noninterstate highway in compliance with this section may 6 travel on an interstate highway without violating the gross 7 weight limit requirements of this section in order to continue 8 traveling on the noninterstate highway, if continued travel on 9 the noninterstate highway reasonably requires the vehicle to 10 travel on the interstate highway for less than five miles. 11 EXPLANATION 12 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 13 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 14 This bill provides that a motor vehicle with a gross weight 15 of more than 80,000 pounds traveling on a noninterstate highway 16 in compliance with Code section 321.463 may travel on an 17 interstate highway without violating interstate highway gross 18 weight limit requirements in order to continue traveling on the 19 noninterstate highway, if continued travel on the noninterstate 20 highway reasonably requires the vehicle to travel on the 21 interstate highway for less than five miles. 22 Because the bill allows motor vehicles with a gross weight 23 of more than 80,000 pounds to travel on interstate highways, 24 Iowa’s federal aid road funding may be affected. 25 -1- LSB 5834YH (2) 86 ns/nh 1/ 1
