H.F. 2036 Section 1. Section 272.2, Code 2016, is amended by adding 1 the following new subsection: 2 NEW SUBSECTION . 20. Adopt rules to license as a secondary 3 teacher endorsed to teach only science, mathematics, 4 engineering, or technology courses at the grade nine through 5 grade twelve level, an applicant who has not graduated from 6 an approved practitioner preparation program but who, at a 7 minimum, holds a bachelor’s degree with a major course of 8 study in science, mathematics, engineering, or technology from 9 an accredited postsecondary institution; has successfully 10 completed at least one semester credit hour in an online 11 methodology course at the university of northern Iowa; has 12 completed at least six thousand hours of successful, recent, 13 and relevant employment in a profession related to science, 14 mathematics, engineering, or technology; and has successfully 15 passed the educational testing services’ Praxis II subject 16 examination for biology and general science if the endorsement 17 sought is to teach a science course, or the educational 18 testing services’ Praxis II mathematics content and knowledge 19 examination if the endorsement sought is to teach a mathematics 20 course. 21 EXPLANATION 22 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 23 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 24 This bill authorizes the board of educational examiners 25 to adopt rules to license as a secondary teacher endorsed to 26 teach only science, mathematics, engineering, or technology 27 courses at the grade 9 through 12 level, an applicant who 28 has not graduated from an approved practitioner preparation 29 program but who, at a minimum, holds a bachelor’s degree with 30 a major in science, mathematics, engineering, or technology 31 from an accredited postsecondary institution; has successfully 32 completed at least one semester credit hour in an online 33 methodology course at the university of northern Iowa; has 34 completed at least 6,000 hours of successful, recent, and 35 -1- LSB 5362YH (2) 86 kh/rj 1/ 2
